The purpose of this petition is to let Strata 1601 Council know how many residents are in favour of banning the Times Colonist driver from entering our community, based on both safety and noise violations.

The problem: The delivery driver for the Times Colonist:

  • Speeds through our community in the middle of the night with a noisy older vehicle, constantly waking up residents with bedrooms facing the street every night a delivery is made.
  • Drives through stop signs where collisions with our Security vehicle have been narrowly missed (as per our Security staff).
  • Drives on the wrong side of the road while making deliveries which have also resulted in near collisions with our Security vehicle (as per our Security staff).
  • Smokes pot down at the marina parking lot then drives through our community while under the influence (as per our Security staff).

Multiple contacts have been made with the Times Colonist management but they refuse to do anything about this driver. Contact has been made with the RCMP about the traffic violation and drug issues. They have indicated that because we are a private community, they are unable to enforce the Highway Traffic Act. They are also helpless when it comes to drug enforcement as their ability to make a charge stick is diminished with the Liberal government's plan to legalize marijuana. They have advised strongly that our Council ban this driver from entering our community as we have the legal right to do that.

If you are effected by the noise in the middle of the night, you will know first hand how annoying this can be...please sign this petition. If you don't experience the noise issue but are concerned about the safety and security of our community, please sign this petition so that we can once and for all rid our community of this driver who has no regard for the law. The Times Colonist will replace the driver, but only if they are forced to do so.

Updates

October 10, 2016

The amount of support we have gathered has finally forced the Strata Council to acknowledge the danger this driver presents to our streets. It has been an exhausting fight to get them to listen but we are not going to let this sit until our community is safe again.

Let's do something about this horrible driver. I have not had a good night sleep over half a year!!

We are in favour of this ban as we have been woken up several times with the noisy, speeding car used to deliver the Times-Colonist.

We are daily exposed to this particularly because the bedroom is located at the street side of the house.

If as reported, this is not to be toletrated any longer. The Times Colonist should be called upon to act immediately, and the reckless individual held accountable. An insgtant replacement should be sought immediately. Tired of this lack of judgement on the driver's part. If the TC will not act to end this,we should consider cancelling any subscriptions we might have.

His car is very noisy and he speeds up and then down Saltspring View. Worried that he may crash into a house as road is narrow.

Good luck with this. We switched to digital delivery of TC a while ago and by far prefer it anyway. This guy wakes us up many mornings racing past. Would be glad to have him gone or replaced.

We spend our winters in a similar community in Palm Desert CA. They had the same problem with their paper delivery boy a couple of years ago. But solved it in a different way. They all chipped in and bought him a new muffler. On what he earned they knew he probably couldn't afford a new muffler for his old car.

Him having an accident here would not be a good way to get Arbutus Ridge in the Colonist news. The colonist must have pretty low standards to not take note of their customers' complaints to date.
