The speeding and noise have become too much for residents of Departure Bay, namely along Departure Bay Road adjacent to the beach. Drag racing, loud music, parties, alcohol and drug use all plague residents well past 10:00 p.m on weekdays and weekends.

Secondary to the noise is the speeding, threatening the safety and well-being of families accessing the beach and park. Enough is enough.

I will be speaking with Nanaimo's Public Safety Committee on June 22 at 7:00 p.m at the Downtown Convention Centre. The original meeting scheduled for June 10 at 4:00 p.m was abruptly cancelled due to lack of quorum, aka not enough of the committee members showed up. I would like to have as many signatures as possible to support the following asks:

(1) Increased presence and strict enforcement from RCMP

(2) Clear signage reminding beach-goers of the City’s noise by-law with clear direction on the outcomes of violating this by-law, with a focus on drag racing vehicles and loud engines

(3) Larger signage and traffic calming speed deterrents

The drag racing on departure bay rd is extremely concerning. Seems to be the same individuals both vehicles and motorcycles.

This situation is out of control. Whatever happened to Excessive Noise tickets, or Disturbing the Peace?

I am not one to usually complain about noise in neighbourhoods but this is more than just kids having fun. There is excessive speeding and drunk driving every night. Many times I have watched the cops come and encourage the teenagers to drive away, without breathalizing them. The kids are also targeting the apartments across from the beach. They will scream "Wake the F--- up fa---ts" over and over and honk their horns, I have also had something thrown at my window. I am concerned with how it is escalating and how they are putting themselves and the community at risk.

I believe there should be speed bumps for the area from the hill at the park, to the hill leaving 7-11 a children are often around this area and there has been so much more traffic with our growing population.

I live at 2815 Departure Bay Rd across from the beach. My sleep is disturbed on a nightly bases due to drag racing, loud cars, loud music and unruly behaviour well into the night. I work remotely full time and I am up at 6:45am, sleep is the most important factor for my health and well being. The anxiety of anticipating these disturbances on a nightly bases is unacceptable. I love my home and Departure Bay. I can’t imagine having to consider leaving my home due to these circumstances.

This issue needs to be addressed. It’s not “just” for the residents of Departure Bay and our right to quiet enjoyment of our properties but it’s an enormous safety issue. These maniacs put other drivers, pedestrians, pets and wildlife at risk. Are you planning on waiting until someone is killed before taking action?

Too many people hit by cars. Traffic calming measures are needed
