Subject: Petition Regarding Traffic Noise and Road Safety at the
Intersection of Mooloolaba Esplanade and Venning Street, Mooloolaba.
We, the undersigned residents and business operators of Northern Mooloolaba, formally submit this petition to draw the Council’s urgent attention to escalating traffic noise and road safety issues in our local area. Specifically, we are severely impacted by anti-social driving behaviours in the immediate vicinity of the Mooloolaba Esplanade and Venning Street intersection (from Buderim Ave to Venning Street, and from the Esplanade to Walan Street). This disruptive activity occurs 24 hours a day, 7 days a week - more so at late evening and night - with a significantly heightened and unbearable presence on Friday /
Saturday nights and over the weekend.
We request that the Sunshine Coast Council, as the designated Road Owner, acknowledge that we are facing two separate and distinct issues:
1. Excessive and Intentional Acceleration: High-powered motorbikes and vehicles frequently engage in heavy, deliberate acceleration. This occurs in both directions from Mooloolaba Esplanade / Buderim Avenue intersection onto Venning St through to the corner of the Walan Street intersection. This behaviour causes extreme noise pollution, even when the vehicle remains within the legal speed limit.
2. Vehicle Speeding: Dangerous speeding remains a constant issue along the same corridors, compromising the safety of pedestrians and other road users.
Impact on the Community and Economy
The resulting noise pollution has made outdoor socialising and dining virtually impossible for local residents and patrons. Furthermore, local businesses are reporting that this environment is actively detracting from Mooloolaba’s reputation as a premier holiday destination, negatively impacting tourism retention and repeat visitor bookings.
While we are concurrently engaging with the Sunshine Coast Police to address these issues, we recognise that law enforcement can only provide temporary relief. A permanent, structural solution is required.
PETITION TO SUNSHINE COAST COUNCIL
Action Requested from Sunshine Coast Council:
We strongly request that the Sunshine Coast Council conduct a thorough traffic review of the immediate area and implement the following measures:
Targeted Noise and Hooning Mitigation:
- Evaluate infrastructure solutions to combat excessive vehicle acceleration from Mooloolaba Esplanade (at the Meta Street corner) through to Venning Street (at the Walan Street corner).
- Speed Limit Review and Enforcement Infrastructure: Review the
appropriateness of the current speed limit across this zone. Following this review, we request the installation of permanent speed cameras to capture and deter speeding motorists. We also request a review of the use and installation of acoustic cameras similar to those being used in the State of Victoria.
- Review of Pedestrian Crossing/s: Review existing pedestrian crossing in relation vehicles running red light heading south through traffic lights and timing to cross road safely and options for additional pedestrian crossings in this area.
We thank the Council for its prompt attention to this matter and look forward to your formal response regarding the investigation of these road safety concerns.

The hoons especially start ting on the weekends are simply unbearable. It seems they think they are bulletproof because there seems to be no police presence to stop them. Would welcome any action to put a stop to these hoons. Whatever happened to roadside vehicle inspections to ensure vehicles are legal.
This issue is important to me personally because I live and work in this area and see the impact of excessive traffic noise and dangerous driving behaviour on our community on a regular basis. As a father, the safety of children, pedestrians and all road users is a priority for me, and I believe our local streets should feel safe for families at all times of the day and night. From a hospitality perspective, I also see the significant impact this behaviour has on the experience of visitors stay
