We, the undersigned, respectfully request that you lend your assistance to our quest to have the Rockwell Avenue, Scranton bridge replacement project placed at the top of the list for completion. This bridge has been on the list for at least 20 years and has been discussed for repair/replacement for approximately 40 years. On April 25, 2012, an inspector deemed the bridge too dangerous for use and required it be closed to all traffic. With this closure, a very large part of North Scranton was cut off from West Market Street, making it necessary for residents to travel over a very dangerous hill, Mary Street. In this part of North Scranton, there is a housing development (Bangor Heights) where many residents don't own cars and must use the COLTS bus system, which has limited hours. There are also many young children and seniors in this neighborhood who are placed in danger with the additional motorized traffic. The additional cost for transportation (including increased cab fare) is taxing to those on a fixed or limited income. This closure also affects businesses on the West Market Street side of the bridge, such as Noone's Market and the Convenient Market, which are within walking distance of the area and count on walking traffic for much of their business. It also affects the religious health of our area since many people attend the nearby places of worship, placed on the other side of the bridge. Another problem with the bridge's closure is the fact that emergency vehicles now have to spend more time to get to our neighborhood, again posing a threat when they are coming over Mary Street hill even when they have their sirens on. What would normally take our nearest fire department on West Market Street five minutes to travel will now take them up to fifteen minutes with a few tight turns, as well. We appreciate any consideration you can give in your decision to expedite the replacement of the Rockwell Avenue Bridge. North Scranton Neighborhood Association Paul MacDonald, President
