Re-open Griffith Park
This petition is directed towards the Los Angeles City Council, Mayor Villaraigosa, Tom LaBonge and the Los Angeles department of Parks and Recreation. The signatures listed in this petition consitute persons who believe that Griffith Park should be re-opened. Griffith J. Griffith, envisioned a city of millions who needed\" ... a place of recreation and rest for the masses, a resort for the rank and file ...\" As a gift in December 1896, he gave five square miles of land to the City of Los Angeles, to be used for a public park in his name. Today, Griffith Park is the largest urban municipal park in the nation. It boasts an impressive roster of special facilities, amenities, and recreational opportunities that, by conservative estimates, are enjoyed by upwards of 10 million visitors annually. This visitor base is drawn from both tourists and from the City of Los Angeles and surrounding communities themselves, which is one of the most culturally diverse regions in the world. We believe that Griffith Park should be opened, providing financial benefits to the region, the prospect of increased tourism to the area and giving back to the residents of Los Angeles a necessary recourse for hiking, relaxing and viewing the awsome views of Los Angeles and the San Bernadino valley that Griffith Park has offered for 110 years. Sincerely, The Undersigned
