Canco Park continues to be closed, not for concerns from the coronavirus but instead, from the interests of the Canco Park Conservancy Coalition, a small group of people, several of which don't live in this community. To be quite clear, in the words of the Mayor of Jersey City, Steven Fulop:

"We are working with the community on restoring the grass and the parks coalition asked us to wait til the first or second week of June. Being that the parks coalition has been the partner for the city for years we are respectful of their wishes as they always advocate for the best of the open space. Hopefully you understand and we will have this space open to the public very soon."

Now, this coalition doesn't represent the interests of the community, but for some reason, the Mayor believes it does. It is for this reason, that I am starting this petition. I have lived at 25 Senate for about 4 years now and have experienced members of this coalition harassing members of this community for their own self-interest. When I first moved in, members of this coalition followed me around the park, when I was alone with my dog, claiming that dogs weren't allowed in the park.

I am not against the beautiful gardening in the park, but I am against that interest, at the expense of the community who so needs the opportunity to be out in nature. As we have witnessed or experienced, quarantining affects the mental health of all of us. Additionally, in sending pictures back to the Mayor, I noted that the grass has already grown in sufficiently.

If you would like to see the park re-opened for all of us to enjoy, rather than for a few in a coalition, please sign this petition. I will send it to the Mayor, as I believe the interests of this coalition have come to represent this community erroneously and the Mayor may not know this.

Please open the park. It is never very crowded and the people who use it are aware of social distancing.

I cannot understand why this precious open PUBLIC space is being controlled by a certain entity. This ward (and especially west of Journal Square) has minimal park space and therefore is quite valuable to all the residents. Please open the park now.

While I appreciate the need for the grass to grow, this does not outweigh immediate need for public space (of course following social distancing), especially for local children.

It’s my understand Canco Park is a public park and belongs to the tax payers. The park was ordered closed by the government related to public health concern. This order has since been lifted. Keeping the park closed to the public after the order was lifted, as requested by a self-appointment special interest group, is an abusive of power, and an insult to the voting tax payers. I hope in the future, decisions made in the name of the good of the community are constructed and delivered by local elected officials and not a group of usurpers.
