I went to this school when I was a kid. How awesome to have it named after Uncle Roy.
Roy was one of the bravest man ive ever known and naming a school in his home town would be paying Roy the respect he deserves. As an australian vietnam vet I am so glad our paths cross and im proud to call Roy a Mate of mine. Duty First.
This is a great idea. It's long overdue. Roy at one time had a special relationship with Northside Elementary. When he returned from Washington, D.C. after the Medal ceremony, it was the Northside choir who sang in the ECHS gym as part of the Welcome Home ceremony.
I am a member of the 551st MRBC Engineer Battalion, an Army National Guard Battalion stationed in El Campo, TX. This man was a hero worthy of recognition. I strongly urge you to consider changing the name of your elementary school in his honor.
I do not live in that community but have learned of an effort currently underway regarding the renaming of Northside Elementary to MSG Roy P. Benavidez. The connection and history he's had to and with that public entity makes the greatest sense that this be the facility to be dedicated to and in honor of his name. Frankly I am appalled that there is no establishment in El Campo, of any kind for that matter, named after this war hero. This is long overdue and I measure my words expressing my bewilderment. It shouldn't be an "effort" to get this accomplished but should be a nothing less than a privilege to be able to do so. To have a son of your hometown not honored in said hometown of El Campo simply makes no sense.

I've had the honor of teaching on the Roy P. Benavidez Elementary School located in the South San Antonio ISD. It is customary in Texas that there would only be one school with a name, therefore, maybe to name a Middle or Intermediate School after him would be better. God Bless his memory and God Bless America.
