Petition to establish collective bargaining agreements between the VMA and Cory Weeds /Cellar Jazz Society / Coastal Jazz and Blues Society/ Pat's Pub
We the undersigned are members in good standing of the Vancouver Musician's Association, Local 145, A.F. of M.
We are requesting that the VMA negotiate collective bargaining agreements with the following organizations, individuals and/or venues:
Cory Weeds
The Cellar Jazz Society
Coastal Jazz and Blues Society
Francesco's Restaurant
Frankie's Italian Kitchen and Bar
The Italian Cultural Centre
Pat's Pub
The primary objective of these agreements will be to establish VMA sanctioned rates and ensure payment of all fees, including work dues, pension and GST.

I am gathering documentation on payment delays to present to the board. Contact your representatives at the union today and demand they prioritize these bargaining agreements. We need everyone to keep the pressure on these venues until they agree to fair, standardized rates.

The momentum behind this push for fair contracts shows that musicians are ready to demand the professional standards we deserve. Post the link on Facebook right now and email your VMA representatives to tell them this issue requires their immediate attention.

In the past similar initiatives have run into difficulty because the people involved haven't presented a common, united front. I've written Chris with a long letter on some of the history but the success of Chris' proposal depends on each of us upholding the worth of our colleagues. Nothing more and nothing less. It's simple if we all agree to support each other. We are as important to these venues as the LCB or Sysco accounts - absent these suppliers the venues will have nothing to sell. Simple, really if we all get behind the initiative.
It's long overdue for PROFESSIONAL musicians to be treated as professionals by employers and live music establishments.
I think something can easily be worked out. Our local has shown a willingness to be flexible with smaller venues in the past. Thank you for initiating this dialogue, Chris!

Equality - something we all have to be proactive in achieving. Jazz musicians at jazz-type venues are no less deserving of pension contributions than anyone else in the performance field. Chris is right though - we all have to do our part. Thanks for doing this Chris - Julia
Hmm. There are VMA minimum tariffs in place already 9. Casual Engagements (1) Licensed Establishments $90 for 4 hrs. or even 10. Concert Engagements (3) Popular and Jazz 2 1/2 hrs $148.10 for sideman/$222.16. I’m I missing something? ( other than no matter what scale is there are musicians who will work for less and venues happy to pay them less)

What if the Vancouver International Jazz Festival was a union gig with guaranteed scale and a pension? This is what I'm excited about!
