Thank you for your participation in this petition to the City of Laurel, Maryland government requesting control of the public nuisance, noise, reckless driving, speeding and failure to stop at marked intersections. This petition request specific enforcement in the Historic District of Laurel, especially along Prince George Street, Fourth Street, Fifth Street, Montgomery Street and other intersecting and cross streets. This petition includes exhibitions of speed, nuisance reckless noise that sounds similar to weapon discharge, excessive automobile noise and dangerous reckless or other vehicle operation that disturbs the safety and security of City residents. For purposes of this petition exhibition of speed means to accelerate a driving a motor vehicle for amusement or to draw the attention of bystanders or nearby motorists. The act is also commonly referred to as reckless driving, “flooring it“, “speed ex“, or street racing.

Updates

April 28, 2021

The feedback from neighbors keeps coming in and the stories about the noise and reckless driving at night are as exhausting as they are infuriating. I have been spending my evenings documenting these incidents because silence from the city does not mean we are going to stop paying attention.

April 28, 2021

Seeing the count climb this high feels heavy because it confirms so many of us are living through the same exhaustion every night. I am tired of the noise and the recklessness but this momentum keeps me moving toward the officials who need to listen.

Drivers going east on Prince George Street gun their engines and speed toward Route One after they stop at the intersection of P.G. and 4th Streets.

The noise level produced by these cars is getting out of control. I hear them at all times of day and night but the noise travels excessively at night! This town seems to be attracting other similar noise-making cars from all over the DMV. It has to stop!

The city should employ the same simple, effective, proven solutions other cities have and divert through traffic around the historic district rather than through it. All through traffic should be diverted to rt1, 216/7th street, 198, or main street. There should be no through traffic on montgomery or 4th or 5th. Simple, easy, effective

It is only a matter of time before an innocent bystander is killed

And please work with surrounding counties to crack down on it outside city lines. This is a danger and also a constant nuisance.
