There’s a Big Problem in Our Neighborhoods with Illegal Dirt-bikes!
DEAR NEIGHBORS, THIS IS A PETITION THAT WILL HOPEFULLY GET A RESPONSE FROM THOSE IN AUTHORITY IN THE 3 DEPARTMENTS THAT ARE BEING APPEALED TO FOR REDRESS OF AN ONGOING AND SERIOUS NEIGHBORHOOD PROBLEM. Dear Ms. LaFave, Director of Syracuse Parks and Recreation Dept.; City of Syracuse Chief of Police Buckner, and Mayor Ben Walsh: This petition is being sent to your respective offices in the hopes that if we present our collective concerns to you, we will be heard.
Individual phone calls or emails seem to have proven ineffective thus far. We are your neighbors, your fellow citizens, your constituents. Please listen to our petition as we collectively ask you to not only monitor the cameras that we trust have been placed in Elmwood Park, but to take action to solve the illegal and dangerous operation of dirt bikes in the park. The illegal and dangerous operation of dirt bikes has also been an ongoing problem on the streets and sidewalks of the greater Strathmore Neighborhood, the South Ave. Neighborhood that borders Elmwood Park, and streets around Corcoran High Shool. We are very concerned for the safety of our children and pets while we are lawfully and respectfully enjoying Elmwood Park. We are equally concerned for the safety of our families in our own front yards, sidewalks, and driveways when the operators of these illegal vehicles are racing through our neighborhoods. Please let us know what you intend to do in order to address our very serious concerns. We thank you in advance for your attention and as we anticipate your timely responses. I spent the morning walking through the park and had to pull my dog off the path twice just to avoid speeding riders. Your stories of near misses on these sidewalks are why I am pushing so hard to get a sit-down meeting with the Mayor and the Police Chief. We deserve to reclaim our public spaces.

Seeing the count climb makes me feel like my kids might actually be able to play in Elmwood Park again without us having to constantly look over our shoulders. It is a massive relief to know I am not the only neighbor terrified by these dirt bikes on our sidewalks. We are finally getting the attention this danger deserves.

Again today there were approx 20 flying through the park (I’m sure not legally registered or insured) people walking the paths had to run to the side along with their pets to get out of danger...they should not be there and something has to be done...
The dirt bikes and ATVs are disruptive, destructive, and make the park feel unsafe. Infrastructure should be adjusted to make physically difficult to ride such vehicles in the park and the police need to crack down and seize such vehicles that are not properly licensed and insured.
Dirt bikes throughout the Strathmore neighborhood are a huge and dangerous issue. I’ve called 911 several times already this season to report them. Any attention to this issue is much appreciated.
Ignoring this behavior is a disservice to law abiding residents of the Elmwood neighborhood. If no action is taken to stop this disrespect of property I want a public explanation. I vote, pay taxes and follow the law, these bikers are destructive and blatantly destroying public property.
Last week 15 of them congregated at the bottom of the hill below our house by the brook. The path dead ends at this point, They revved their bikes continuously, the noise was deafening and the exhaust fumes worse. My husband screamed at them to get out of the park and after 5 to ten minutes they turned around to the path they came in on, crossed the bridge over the brook and did wheelies all over the park lawn. I had called the police as soon as I heard them, I’m not sure if they ever came. A couple with their dog had been sitting on a fallen log near the creek until these guys came along. They were terrified. This park is gorgeous and these illegal vehicles are ruining it. We may sell our house of 37 years if this continues.

I feel like I’m living at the Indy 500. I hear the roar of these bikes all afternoon and evening. I was walking in Onondaga one day and was almost hit by one. Why should they be allowed to flaunt the rules of the road and get away with it! Time to do something about this
