As of 2017, CDHBC is forcing all members to pay the optional BCDHA fee with what they are calling Streamlined Professional Renewal.

This change means CDHBC will be collecting all fees on behalf of other associations, such as BCDHA. If BC dental hygienists do not join the non-mandatory BCDHA they will not be allowed to renew their CDHBC memberships, which they need by law to legally work. CDHBC acknowledges the fact dental hygienists can opt out of being a BCDHA member after they pay the dues, but no refund will be given.

We feel the CDHBC is over stepping their boundaries in order to increase BCDHA memberships therefore increasing BCDHA revenue.

According to CDHBC, 27% of BC Dental Hygienists do not want to be a part of BCDHA as it is not mandatory for them to do so. CDHBC is planning on holding its mandatory memberships hostage unless dental hygienists pay a non-mandatory, non-refundable fee. We feel this is extortion and abuse of power from CDHBC and would like the Honourable Terry Lake, Minister of Health BC to take action and stop the Streamlined Professional Renewal.

The growth in support has reached a level that allows us to formally request a meeting with the Minister of Health. I am currently drafting a letter outlining the professional conduct concerns to ensure our position is clearly documented for his office.

I just switched to DH pro because I have never used anything that the insurance offered (benefits etc) except for the malpractice insurance and bc I was supposed to save at least $300 a month and now have to pay ridiculous prices for something that I will not use is not okay. This is a monopoly just like the QAP

These decisions seem to be made by people who are not actually IDHPs themselves and thus unaware of how we are affected. This is an example of "tied selling" - we have no choice and that is wrong.

I belong to both and always have. I object to forcing people to belong to both. Any way you want to word it, it's a money grab

I was very disappointed with CDHBC when they introduced the mandatory written exam, to the point that I chose to renew as a non-practicing member after keeping my practicing membership for 10yrs post cancer treatment/disability issues. If this mandatory payment to BCDHA is not stopped, I will likely stop paying all together.

It is unethical to remove my right to choose who provides my liability insurance. To charge me a much higher amount to line your pockets all the while claiming it is in the publics interest and benefit speaks volumes of the ethics of this organization. It is a complete infringement on my rights and should be illegal. You have no right.

I oppose mandatory membership into a professional organization in order to be licensed to practice dental hygiene in the province of BC. CDHBC is taking away our right to choose and this so called "streamline process" goes beyond their scope as a regulatory body to protect the public.

CDHBC's mandate is to protect the public. Part of protecting the public is ensuring confidence in the public that detail hygienists have continuous, comprehensive professional liability insurance coverage. If we want our College to consider approving other providers as it has in the past, it seems reasonable to approach the College with proof that other providers reflect the same comprehensive level of liability coverage that BCDHA and other provinces' associations offer. It would be helpful to have a comparison chart showing the details of BCDHA's insurance versus other popular liability insurance coverage companies that Canadian dental hygienists use (DH Pro and CDSPI seem to be popular choices). The comparison chart would need to source the information so it could be checked, of course.
