I am a Citizen, Property Owner, or Person who does real estate business in Opelika and I oppose the Residential Rental Property

Registration & Inspections Ordinance.

I oppose the additional cost that I will incur as a citizen living in Opelika.

I oppose the violation of my privacy.

I oppose the increase in homelessness due to the lack of affordable housing.

I oppose the intrusion of the government into private contracts.

I oppose that citizens were NOT involved in the planning or discussions of this Ordinance.

I request the City Council to oppose the ORDINANCE ADOPTING A

REGISTRATION AND INSPECTION PROGRAM FOR RESIDENTIAL PROPERTIES

the momentum we have right now is honestly incredible and shows how many of us feel brushed aside by the city. its clear that people are tired of this ordinance moving forward without our input so lets keep this pressure on the council.

This hurts a lot of good people for no good reason. If there are a few problematic cases, then attack the problems. Don’t attack everyone because of a few. Common sense.

We have 8 houses all in Opelika. If this passes, it will be a real burden on small landlords like myself. Our options will be to raise rents to cover the additional cost or get out of the rental business. We already sold 2 of our houses in Alexander City because of unreasonable fines and taxes on the landlords.

Thé City already charges unrefundable deposit to turn on utilities. This is a money maker for city and they are going to cost landowners money. Waiting for inspection is not okay when rental houses turn in a day at times. Not happy!!

It is my understanding that the new ordinance does not include section 8 rental property. If section 8 rental property is not addressed then any additional ordinances are totally without merit and are counterproductive

The ordinance to correct these types of issues is already in play, it's not getting enforced because it covers ALL homes not just rental properties. We've got all the laws we need, try some order. The elected and hired officials of Opelika are NOT doing their job.

Typical government overreach on regulation. It increases the costs for the landlord, which are passed on to the tenant. Tenants can't afford higher rents, especially given the rampant inflation. Sadly, this will result in more homeless families as landlords take rental units off the market.

Where does this stop? When a person buys property in Opelika, all they are really doing is agreeing to fund whatever unnecessary project y’all come up with. New libraries, when the original isn’t used and the building isn’t in bad shape. Or building school buildings for each grade. The “leaders” of Opelika have proven they are not good stewards of the moneys they already control.
