Final supporters
We, the undersigned residents of the Town of Norwell, Massachusetts, petition the Board of Selectmen to vote in favor of placing an article on the Warrant for Special Town Meeting for a debt exclusion override to fund the installation of a sidewalk along Main Street from South Street to Town Center.
The project will provide the following benefits:
- A safe, granite curbed sidewalk with a two feet strip of grass and a 5 foot wide paved sidewalk along the South Side of Main Street from South Street to Town Center.
- Mailboxes would not be impacted as they can be put on the grass strip facing the normal way, perpendicular to Main Street.
- The ability for the citizens of Norwell to safely walk to Town Center, the Middle School, High School, Woodworth Baseball Fields, Town Hall, and connect to the Pathway
- A more vibrant Town Center: We spoke to 11 of the businesses in Town Center and they all support this project as a way to increase foot traffic in Town.
- Increased home values: Various realtors have said that homebuyers are looking for more walkable communities and that the sidewalks would lead to a tangible increase in residential property values in Town.

I have spent my mornings walking this stretch of Main Street and watching families struggle to navigate the traffic just to reach the fields. The stories you are sharing about near misses and the lack of safe routes for our kids have only strengthened my resolve to make this town walkable for everyone.

Seeing the growing traction for these sidewalks reminds me of why I fought so hard for my own children to walk safely to the fields. The momentum we have built together proves that our community truly values a connected and accessible Norwell.

As a realtor, I know there's a trend toward buyers wanting to live in walkable communities. Having sidewalks in Norwell is one step in the right direction.
I grew up in Norwell and walked everywhere in this town. My friends and I always wished for sidewalks!
Greatly needed. Too dangerous to even get mail. Can't walk anywhere in this beautiful area!
I grew up in a town appreciated and known for it's rural character, Lincoln, and it had sidewalks. Many come to the town for recreation, and take advantage of the nearly town-wide sidewalks. The sidewalks, and the many interactions they facilitate, encourage community on otherwise isolating main streets. The construction of sidewalks in my hometown were largely a reaction to a deadly accident involving a cyclist. A Hanover mother was killed while running in Hanson a few months ago. I wouldn't want to have that happen in our town. I see kids walking along main roads regularly in the summer.
We need this project, especially for children to have the optoin of traveling safely on Norwell's roadways. I will not currently allow my children to walk or bike on Norwell roads, because the prevalence of distracted driving has made it unsafe for anyone to share the roadway with motorists. In our sedentary, plugged-in world, anything that will increase the physical activity and social interaction of our children would be a huge benefit to our community. Thank you, Jefferson Detwiler
