A Sidewalk Connecting Willieb St. and New London Tpk. via Williams Street East to Address Pedestrian Safety
The intersection of Williams Street East and Willieb Street heading north on Williams Street to the intersection of New London Turnpike is a heavily traveled route by Glastonbury Town residents on foot and in vehicles. The lack of a sidewalk connecting Willieb, Williams Street East and New London Turnpike puts those Glastonbury residents on foot at risk and maintains an ongoing dangerous condition.
Therefore, to allow for safe pedestrian traffic walking to and from the Stop & Shop super market, CVS drug store, other retailers nearby, and to the center of town – residents of The Soap Factory, English Hill, and Hubbard Run Condominium Associations, Village Green (Knox Lane,) Buttonball Street, Hubbard Street, Willieb Street, Williams Streets East and West, Main Street and other residents in this area, including Glastonbury Magnet and High School students (well over 400 town residents living within 2 square blocks of the petitioned sidewalk area) and all undersigned are formally petitioning the Town of Glastonbury to provide a sidewalk from the intersection of Williams Street East and Willieb Street heading north on Williams Street to the intersection of New London Turnpike and that it be included in the 2014-2015 capital budget and planned for completion in 2014.

I walk this very often and had a couple close calls. If I didn't jump out of the way, in the nick of time, I would've been run over by a truck and possibly killed. I fully back this idea. I think we should also put up a few lights. One at the bridge and the other two throughout the S-turn.
This has become a major connector street linking residential and commercial zones. Between the narrow passage and the curves, a sidewalk is essential to ensure safety.
With Stop&Shop, and now the CVS on the corner, there is more foot traffic then ever. I've walked this route and feel uncomfortable every time I do it. I especially worry about the elderly woman with her walker who many of us have gone by while driving. This small stretch of road is quite dangerous with all it's curves for those on foot.
I watch with trepidation as an elderly woman from the housing complex on Hubbard Street makes her way through the neighborhood en route to Stop & Shop. With thanks to Glastonbury government for completing the sidewalk from Hubbard St. to Williams St. E., it is now time to complete the job with a sidewalk on Williams Street to the New London Turnpike.
Several people walk through that area including and elderly woman with a Walker. It's so windy and dangerous for pedestrian and drivers
The need for a sidewalk in this area meets and exceeds Glastonbury's Sidewalk Prioritization Criteria. 1. School Access -The needed connection is in the vicinity of THREE schools and will improve pedestrian access to the properties. 2. School Bus Route Reduction - A safer and more efficient school bus routing can be achieved by completing the proposed sidewalk connection. 3. Special Needs Community Area - Sidewalk will improve access to facilities with a large population of elderly, hand-capped, or other special needs person (Knox Lane) 4. Town Center and Other Commercial Access Areas - Sidewalk connection will extend the both Town Center sidewalk network and the network surrounding other commercial areas (Stop and Shop, CVS, Sam's, Shopping on New London Turnpike) 5. Access to Town Park and Other Town Facilities – Access to the Hubbard Green, High School, and Recreation Department would be provided by the proposed sidewalk connection. 6. Regional Sidewalk Network Connection – The connection between two regional sidewalk networks, Wilieb Street and New London Turnpike, is achieved through the proposed sidewalk project. 7. Heavy Recreational Use Area –Sidewalk connection is proposed along a route where heavy pedestrian use for recreational purposes is present. 8. Heavy Pedestrian Traffic – Heavy pedestrian usage of proposed sidewalk area is visually noted by residents and drivers, and by worn paths evident along the roadway. 9. Special Safety Concern Area – Sidewalk connection is in an area of particular safety concern for pedestrians, including accelerated vehicle speeds, limited sight line, narrow road, and tight shoulders.
