Two summers ago, my family had bought two chickens to provide us with fresh eggs every morning. Unfortunately, in the city of McHenry, chickens are not legal (even if they live in a small coop) and we were forced to get rid of them or we would be fined. Ever since then we have wanted to purchase more but we knew we would be forced to get rid of them once again. But why? As many people do not know, chickens do not make any noise. They are much, much quieter than any dog. Backyard chickens have no negative effects in neighborhoods whatsoever so why must they be illegal in McHenry? Backyard chickens can only benefit by providing the owners with fresh eggs, fertilized gardens, and even little companions. I am willing to get very involved with this endeavor. I drive 24 miles a day to go take care of my chickens and ducks on a farm just outside of McHenry. I raise them in order to help a few families get fresh eggs that wouldn't have that experience. Also looking for a new home to move them to. Not revoking them just looking to a new place closer to McHenry.
Having had chickens for many years, I moved here and was so disappointed! Chickens are no different than any other pet bird!! As long as no one gets roosters, what's the problem? They would be cooped not running free and take care of any bugs!! Keep garbage out of landfills too
Some might object to a noisy rooster, but for chickens for a great way to transform kitchen scraps into eggs and lesson the human burden on the land fills, I am 100% for. Oh, for the novices out there, you don't need a rooster to get eggs. I would be for a limit on quantity, tho. A large amount of birds can smell without proper maintainence.
I don't know why anyone would object to chickens. My neighbor has them in unincorporated McHenry and the community has no problem with them.
McHenry will keep growing economically if we as a community can remain fairly rural, but with a progressive downtown. Allowing chickens and local farming enable a rich DIY spirit which also facilitates a new generation interested in their health and lifestyle.
McHenry, show your support for sustainability and reconsider backyard chickens. A look at the facts will show you there is no real reason chickens should banned. They are wonderful, easy to care for pets that also provide eggs and fertilizer, while reducing insect pests and weeds. Towns that have recently lifted this ban have found they have little to no complaints and overall have viewed this as a positive change.
The city of Chicago allows chickens but, we can't have them. I want to get chickens to produce eggs. Chickens are quiet and if we follow proper guidelines it should not be a problem. We the people should have the right to have this in our backyards.

I would really love chickens of my own and feel the city of McHenry should change their law! There are many parts of unincorporated that are weaved into the 'city limits' who can have chickens!
