The purpose of this petition is to show the support within our community to change the current ordinance to allow a limited number of backyard hens (no roosters) for those living in single-family homes. The current ordinance only allows areas zoned as agriculture, unless otherwise approved by the city, to raise and care for chickens.
Hens bring many great benefits to the table! Not only do they provide eggs but they also help keep insect populations in check, produce nitrogen rich fertilizer (when composted correctly), root up unsightly weeds, and even companionship.
The soft clucking that comes from hens registers at about 60-70 decibels, which is equivalent to human conversation; lower than a dogs bark which registers at 80-90 decibels. Hens also produce less waste than most dogs. When properly maintained and general hygiene protocols are followed the risk of disease can be avoided.
Backyard hens have been growing in popularity over the years. Many neighboring communities have adjusted their ordinances to allow their residents to raise and care for hens. Batavia, Burr Ridge, Bensenville, Downers Grove, Elburn, Elgin, Madison, Naperville, Oak Brook, St. Charles, Warrenville, Wauconda, and Wooddale to just name a few! Let’s add Woodstock to the list!

I think that is would be fantastic to have chickens in Woodstock. It would allow people to have more control over what they eat {they know how it's raised, what it's eaten in it's life, etc.} and it's more economical to grow your own than buy it at the store.
I am for people having a small flock of chickens in that city limits of woodstock. I barely live in city limits and because a neighbor called the city on me they're saying I need to get rid of my flock (4). I don't have any roosters just eggs that we enjoy and are far healthier for us than store bought.
I adore organic gardening and have wanted chickens for years to decrease the bugs that eat up my beds. Also love having fresh eggs and have always loved chickens in general. Sweet creatures. Hopefully Woodstock gets with the times and follows neighboring towns that allow hens.
Woodstock, please show your support of sustainable living by allowing backyard hens . They are wonderful, easy to care for pets that also provide eggs and fertilizer, while reducing insect pests and weeds. Towns that have recently lifted this ban have found they have little to no complaints and overall have viewed this as a positive change.
chickens are allowed in the city of Chicago, but not Woodstock. Such a shame. How great it would be to have fresh eggs in our own back yard!

We live in Ponds of Bull Valley backing up to the Hooved Animal Humane Society. They have had chickens and roosters in the past. But yet I’m told I can’t have chickens in my fairly large (paid extra) backyard that backs up to the Humane Society. How is that fair???
