Region: Pierce County,WA
Target: Peninsula Metropolitan Park District

Background (Preamble):
Sehmel Homestead Park was opened in 2010 after several years of permitting delay and a price tag close to $8 million dollars. While wildly popular due to pent up demand, a few issues prevent this community jewel from being a crown jewel.   First and foremost is the unlighted all weather turf field.  Because of several factors, lights were left off the initial plan and construction, with the thought of revisiting the issue at a later date.  Also, only about 1 / 4 of the parking lot is currently has lights.  The existing parking lot lights are located away from the area where a large amount of the year around use is occurring,  (play area, tennis courts, all weather field), causing safety concerns by the users. Currently, the turf field is unusable weekdays from October to March and weekend evenings during the same period.  This happens to coincide with peak use by the many youth sports that this field services.

Petition:

With this petition, we the undersigned call on the Peninsula Metropolitan Park District and its’ board of directors to revisit the installation of lights on the turf field at Sehmel Homestead Park

We, the community of Gig Harbor, call on you to expedite the process and move to light your turf field that is currently unusable a substantial amount of the time during peak demand.

We the undersigned ask that the synthetic field at Sehmel Homestead park be lighted so the full use of this facility can be enjoyed by the residents of Gig Harbor year around, in addition to providing additional security around the tennis courts, basketball court and children’s play area.

Thank you for taking the time and effort to consider our plea.

We just hit 100 signatures and Peninsula Metropolitan Park District needs to understand that we are not going away quietly. Spending 8 million dollars on a park just to leave families in the dark is an insult to every taxpayer in this community.

Do it for the kids. Gig Harbor deserves a real park that works for everyone not just part time.

So tired of driving out there and not being able to see my own feet walking to the field. Fix the parking lot lights at least!!!

We need more field time for the soccer teams. Lights would double the availability. Makes no sense to have a turf field you cant use at night.

The kids are out there in the dark trying to practice. It is dangerous and honestly just sad that we spent all that money but forgot the lights.
