Joan Burton has introduced a scheme to take lone parents off the lone parents payment when the youngest child reaches 7 years of age. She describes this scheme as an initiative 'to encourage people back into the jobs market'.
The lone parents payment allows lone parents to work up to 19 hours per week without losing any benefits. Under the new scheme, the only people that will be affected are those that are already working part-time, in that they will have benefit cuts (described as means). This effectively shuts lone parents out of the part-time jobs market.
Please sign our petition to reverse the scheme and keep the lone parents payment until the children have finished secondary school. We will email it to every member of government.

I am honestly overwhelmed by the momentum we have built together lately. This movement belongs to all of you who refuse to accept these changes and I am just humbled to be a part of it.

So unfair this new scheme does not encourage people to go back to work it dies the exact opposite. There just isn't enough 20 hour part time jobs to go round.

Lost my lone last year when my child reached 16 the nest 2 years of her life are the most expensive with going into leaving cert. It's a disgrace I work 2 part time jobs to make ends meet and the fis balance took 3 months to sort I'm now in debt .

I always worked but had to give up when I found it impossible to find someone to look after my autistic child. If i loose this payment, how am i gonna find a job that finishes in time for the school run. Its virtually impossible

I am a single parent to 3 children but I am lucky enough not to have to rely on lone parent payments. I think it's an absolute disgrace to penalise these people who are already struggling, as if the job they do isn't hard enough as it is, ye are making it even harder, really don't know how the government sleeps at night.

We as lone parents need all the support we can get, not to be treated as if we don't matter...... not just a number we are individual parents bringing the next generation up.
