If approved, Mineral County Alternative School will be closing. It is sad to think of the many students who will no longer benefit from the wonderful job that everyone at MCAS does. With support from you we can keep MCAS open, that this proposal does not pass and that the individuals in charge continue to believe in what the school does for its students. The superintendent is proposing to have a single classroom within each middle/high school to place the students that now attend MCAS. Students in these classrooms will have one classroom, one teacher, all day. This teacher will be expected to teach all subjects to each student in the classroom. Student will lose out on the education of social behaviors taught at MCAS. They will lose the ability to learn from a variety of highly qualified teachers. It will be very difficult for the students and teacher. For example if 15 students are “placed” in this classroom that one teacher may be teaching 15 different subjects to those 15 students at the same time.
In a world of "No Child Left Behind", many students in Mineral County struggle with life circumstances most of us can't even imagine...the least of which is taking care of home, family, and the worries of adult life while still being a child. When these students face unrealistic social and expectations in an educational world that is blind or ignorant of the challenges of their young lives, their worlds come crashing down and their behaviors manifest in a wide array of expressions that are in direct contrast to "expected school behaviors" and are left behind in the educational mainstream. The Mineral County Alternative School has a long history and tradition of caring and supportive teachers and staff that believe in all students, and go above and beyond the role of a teacher to that of parent, mentor, counselor, advisor and lifelong support system. Teachers believe in the community and together with the students, provide direct support to the students and families that have the privilege to be part of MCAS. Students are respected by staff, and the greatest gift teachers give to students is trust. That group of students who too frequently get "left behind" until they are fortunate enough to find their way home to MCAS.

I have been spending my nights reading the stories you all are leaving in the comments and my heart breaks for the students who fear losing their only safe place. I am currently preparing my testimony for the upcoming school board meeting to show them exactly what they are threatening to dismantle. Please keep looking out for these kids while I continue pushing behind the scenes.

My own kids found the guidance and stability at this school that they could not get anywhere else. Please send this link to a few people today so we can reach five hundred signatures before our next meeting.

Students priority. MCAS has been effective in education and social development of kids. Personnel will still be required if they're sent to various individual school classrooms. Benefit in this shift seems dubious.
i would not close this school they need this they need these teachers and these teachers need these kids. They can't handle beimg in a regular school they need one on one a teacher can't teach thse kids 15 subjects how are these kids going to learn in a satting like that
Please keep the MCAC open. I have witnessed the caring faculty, staff, and administration at work in this little school impacting the lives of kids who struggle to fit in socially and academically at home schools. Please keep this school open!
The value of a real school cannot be replaced with the "school within a school" or a "classroom within a school". The concept and reality has not been effective in other places. MCAS is a valuable continuum of services with our school system.
Having taught for many years in Clary St/ Alternative School, I know well the importance of the school, the dedication of the staff, and the many students helped. I'd be curious to hear the honest reason for this proposal.
loveddd this school! best memories are here from my school years.
To lose this school and these positions would be an absolute travesty for the students and community.

Why in the world would you get rid of a school that benefits more then the High School. A school that actually prepares you for the workforce. I'd personally rather had spent 8 hours there then at the High School because you actually learn something. It gives you a start on life and more opportunity.
