Akimel A-al Middle School has been more than just an educational institution for me and my peers—it's been a community, a place where we've grown not only academically but personally. Located in the heart of Ahwatukee, Phoenix, AZ, Akimel is a cornerstone for countless students who rely on its supportive environment and dedicated teachers to thrive.

Akimel A-al has been known for academic excellence the past couple of years. Closing Akimel Middle School would mean breaking the bonds we have cultivated and losing a vital part of our community. The very thought of its closure fills us with a sense of loss and devastation. It's not just a school that's disappearing; it's a support system and a home away from home for many.

Akimel A-al is at potential risk of being shut downdue todeclining enrollment numbers. Let's explore all potential avenues to keep Akimel open, such as reallocating funds, enhancing budget transparency, and engaging the community in decision-making processes to ensure a sustainable operation.

It's pivotal that our local education authorities understand the deep impact this decision will have on the lives of students, parents, and teachers—and act accordingly to revoke the closure plan. Our children’s middle school is more than a school — it carries the name of my people, the Akimel O’odham, and proudly displays our culture throughout its halls. Closing it would mean losing a place where generations have learned, grown, and connected to our heritage.

Two of my 3 kids graduated middle school here and had a wonderful experience. I current have a son in 6th grade there. These teachers and this school have shaped my children and helped them grow, to close Akimel would do the community a great disservice

I have 3 children who have attended Akimel and a current kindergartener at Lagos. We specifically chose Lagos for the dual language program that would extend through middle school at Akimel, despite living out of boundaries. We strongly oppose the closure of Akimel.

I’m a 7th grader at Akimel and hope it stays because I can walk to school safely. I also get to be with my friend and I don’t like big changes. I love akimel and don’t want it to shut down so I hope it stays #SaveAkimel

While I understand impact on the budget from funding, I do agree with so many others that this should be a well-thought out phased decision. It seems priority was placed on the “richer” parts of Ahwatukee rather than community impact.

Akimel A-al is a neighborhood middle school. Alternative public middle schools are much further away making daily transit much more difficult. Would there be sufficient room in the remaining schools? I oppose the idea of closing Akimel A-al.

Keep the middle schools open and revisit this conversation/concern in two years. As someone who has previously managed a large department at a different district, I have witnessed first hand the negative impact of closing down schools and dismissal of parent/student concerns has on a district and its morale. Do the right thing, redistribute funding and go back to legislation to request support in order to avoid any and all closures. We are currently experiencing a political crisis in all areas and the children are paying the highest of consequences.
