We note the following:

  • Katesgrove has a severe lack of public green space at the north end of the ward.
  • The success and popularity of the Common Ground innitiative which lead to the Silver Street community garden which was enjoyed by residents until it was closed by the council.
  • The council has previously identified a location at Crown Street/Southampton Street as a potential location for a community managed green space.
  • The site identified by the council is currently the site of four derelict properties, two council owned, which have been an eyesore for many years.

We call on the council to compulsory purchase the two non-council owned properties using monies paid by developers towards improving leisure facilities in the area.

We request that the council draws up plans to demolish the derelict buildings in Southampton Street as soon as possible and to work with local organisations to create a community green space on this site.
