We the undersigned, stand in strong opposition to the proposed re-naming of the Chincoteague Channel Draw Bridge. To re-name the bridge would nullify CPT John B. Whealton's achievment and set a precedence of re-naming all the bridges after a person instead of the body of water they span. Let's preserve our Chincoteague history and not overwrite it.
The current volume of support has secured us a formal meeting with the local transportation board to discuss the historical designation of the bridge. We are now preparing the briefing documents regarding the Whealton legacy to ensure our case remains legally and historically sound.

Ridiculous idea. John Whealton is part of this towns history and that bridge has been the bridge for as long as I can remember.
