The administration finally caved and agreed to mandate real-time grade reporting on Blackboard. It is about time they realized that we deserve to know our own progress without having to hunt down professors. We won this, but keep your eyes open to ensure they actually follow through on these new …

We, the students of Illinois Institute of Technology, feel the faculty needs to consistently post grades to Blackboard (or some other communication medium) in order for students to be able to take responsibility of their academic progress. The grades need to be properly weighted and averaged so that students can stay up-to-date on their mastery of the subject and their overall academic well-being. Grades assess a student's understanding of the material and when a student does not have access to their grades, they cannot determine if they need to change or continue their study habits. Having grades kept up-to-date will not only help student improve their study habits and time management, it also gives IIT staff the opportunity to check-in on students who are struggling and find the means to help them before it truly affects their academic standing. By signing this petition, the students of IIT are asking the faculty to maintain updated and accurate grades that are available online to all students. We ask that the grades are properly categorized and display an overall grade of the course thus far. We also ask that training be made available so that faculty can use Blackboard to its fullest potential.

The administration can no longer ignore the massive wave of students demanding basic transparency in our grade reporting. We have built enough momentum to force the faculty to stop hiding behind outdated systems and finally fix this mess.

It is hard to advise students of their options when they don't know where they stand in class. Do they stay in the class? Do they need to withdraw? The withdrawal date passes and they still have no midterm grade to look at.

As an RA on campus, part of my job is to help my residents who are struggling academically. This is next to impossible to do this when the residents don't have an accurate measure of how they are performing in their classes. The students need to be given a chance to ask for academic help.

We really need this for our students. The situation is worse for grad students.

This is a serious problem that gets worse the higher your seniority. It would be helpful to have a running total to track progress.

I understand that using blackboard is not the best for all professors. I would suggest that the minimum be a weighted/curved midterm grade entered into banner for all courses. This way, a student can see at that they are or are not performing well

It is unfair that many professors do not give you a progress update on your grade by posting grades to assignments throughout the semester. This makes it hard to know your progress in a class and make necessary improvements.

I have some professors who don't even use blackboard which makes it really hard to keep track of my grades in the class.
