We have been given a notice from the City of LA to remove the landscaping and the gate to our alley/parking lot. Even though our alley has been gated for many years the city has given us a short period of notice to remove our improvements of the gate, trees, and balconies. We’re working with the Department of street services and our councilman’s office district 14, Jose Huizar, to maintain our beautiful alley, security of alley and security of parking. We are happy to work with the city to meet any requirements they have or improvements they request and hope they don't push to destroy it.

We want to circulate this issue to all our tenants/employees/neighbors to sign if they support and are in favor of keeping the alley with its current improvements. As we are short on time with the notice we have been given, we would like to hand the petition to the Councilman's office if presented with the opportunity as soon as possible.

Updates

July 20, 2016

I spent the entire morning staring at the city notices pinned to our trees and honestly it still feels like some sort of weird mistake even though I know it isn't. The council office keeps telling me they are looking into it but the lack of actual progress is driving me up the wall because these plants took years to grow and we really just want to keep the space safe.

I really cannot believe how many people feel the same way about our little alleyway oasis and it honestly makes the stress of these city notices feel a bit lighter. I am going to print all of this out to bring to the councilman because it proves that these trees and the gate are not just some random decorations but a real part of our neighborhood life.

I think the city would be mistaken to reverse an effort that beautifies the neighborhood. It also seems to me that the practice of unlocking the gate and opening it up during daylight hours provides a good compromise between civic use and security for the building residents. I advise the city to reconsider.

One of my favorite things when I look out my window is this alley. The landscaping, the trees, the stoops. It has such a nice, neighborhood feel which is what drew me to move into the Arts District.

I support to keep the alley way as it provides a safe place to walk pets at night and remains to be one of the only green areas in the neighborhood. By keeping it locked it protects us from unwelcomed vagrants, graffiti and homelessness. Please see our courtyard as a positive improvement favored by the community and do not demolish. Thank you.

For the safety of the building, I agree that the Alley should be secured.

This alley is very important for us. Most of us that live in this building are artist and this piece of land is a source of our inspiration. We don't want this place with graffiti, trash and homeless around. Please don remove this gate.
