Are you tired of no internet access in Canadian hospitals?
So are we, some hospitals in Canada do offer free Wi-Fi; while others have you pay for it or have no access at all. If you are lucky your hospital may be close to a free hotspot, from a nearby restaurant or store, but that won’t work usually throughout the whole hospital.

Let’s show our hospitals that we do want free Wi-Fi throughout the hospital, especially patients rooms.
This petition is to be used as a way of showing your local hospitals that there are many who want free wifi. We started this to show the Royal Jubilee Hospital the need/want of free internet access.
Many hospitals may already be in the process of getting internet access, hopefully showing them this petition will help speed things along.

Don’t many hospitals already have designated areas or computers to use internet on?

The short answer, Yes.

Why this doesn’t work for many:

  • Person using computer when you need it
  • Designated area, in a space where germs are quickly building up. (Those with compromised immune systems or are on isolation precautions should not be there, for risk of infection or giving others their sick germs)
  • Mobility issues for some patients who can’t leave their room
  • Keeping specific computers clean in between uses is hard to monitor

Next Question, Why should there be Wi-Fi in hospitals?

  • To stay in contact with family and friends who may need to pick us up or bring us something
  • So loved ones can work by a patients bedside if needed
  • For entertainment for the mental health of patients (Helps reduce anxiety, depression and stress, while waiting for procedures, or from getting extremely lonely and bored)

Seeing this momentum grow reminds me of the long nights I spent sitting by a hospital bed with no way to stay connected to the outside world. It is incredibly validating to know so many of you understand why quiet, isolated rooms need this lifeline for patients.

I have been reading your stories about being stuck in recovery without a way to reach your family. Being trapped in a hospital room while feeling disconnected from the rest of the world makes an already difficult situation feel completely unbearable.

With a chronically ill child, we spend large chunks of each year in hosputal. Being able to watch movies on Netflix or work online while in hosputal would reduce the physical & financial stress our family inccurs with every hospital stay.

12 days in VGH, super sick, no wifi. Totally cut off from my family & friends. Had to mask up & leave the hospital to access the internet. Not optimal! Would have happily paid for wifi if that had even been an option. Please hospitals, get with the times!

I was recently on the island when my mom had heart failure. She was in the hospital for 2 weeks. I used up 2 months of data just sitting there while she slept because there was no wifi. And there is only so much books etc to play. Definately needed wifi

I am a frequent hospital patient for lung infections related to my Cystic Fibrosis. Free Wi-Fi will help me to recover and allow me to keep up with work, family and my cystic fibrosis support group when I need them most.

I am a Renal Patent so spend 15 hours a week at Royal Jubilee Hospital. Every staff member has wifi access. All they need to do is give us a username and password - I do not understand where the cost is. The service is already there.

I visit the hospital regularly and often rely on wifi to contact people to bring me food, provide phone numbers, bring me clothing and let people know I am safe. Starbucks offers free wifi without a purchase, we pay for our health care via taxes and the wifi should be free.
