Due to the unfortunate circumstances of a wild fire that destroyed many residential homes and left some uninhabitable, individuals and families requiring rentals has risen drastically. Now is not the time for people to be gouging. Hopefully our government can help with this by nforcing a rent cap So people can still afford to live in our city.

I met with a policy advisor earlier today to discuss the specific legal mechanisms for a temporary rent cap in our municipality. We are currently drafting a formal proposal for the provincial housing office to review this request.

The reach of this petition has hit a point where municipal officials can no longer ignore the data. I have sent the formal request for a meeting with the housing board to discuss implementing these protections.

People should not profit off of other people's tragedy. These people have lost everything and are in need of a safe place to stay and call home. Any assistance should be given, however landlords should not be raising their rent to cash in on the unfortunate situation.
People with nothing will have a hard time getting ahead because some people have no models and will take advantage of the situation. Similar to when oil companies were paying out big LOA to contractors, locals couldn't afgird to live in the community. With insurance now paying the bill it will be the same.
We lost our home in the wild fires. We do have insurance but it is unknown how long it will take to rebuild and will need to rent in the Intrium.
When other towns in Alberta are giving free or very low housing ours are rising and not confirming a place as well some of the non refundable pet deposits of $500 per pet is outrageous when people risked their lives to reunite these pets with their owners, the govt needs to step in an actually help us
We already know the landlords and building owners are already forcing people to pay there rent for June and not reenbursing ppl for mays rent. Away to force ppl out of there lease so they can force them out of there home so they can jack up the rates. Where is the government making sure this does not happen??

Rent is to high now and it shouldn't go any higher because of this disaster... Actually rent should be reduced to help us Fort McMurray residents.

This is 1000% smart! Rent in fort mc was always so expensive and now is definitely not the time to be taking advantage of people misplaced from homes. It's a time to help and support one another however the government needs to step in as well and remember that the people who own the rentals also still have bills to pay as well!!! Stay strong fort mac
