For the second year in a row, Shaker Heights has decided against staging Fourth of July fireworks due to crime and vandalism after the 2012 celebration. The Shaker fireworks display has historically attracted residents of neighboring cities like Warrensville Heights, Cleveland/University Heights and Beachwood; this has made the event prohibitively expensive because of security. We propose forming a confederation for the purpose of providing Fourth of July fireworks. Each year, ONE of the cities will stage the event while ALL of them provide police protection and a portion of the funding. This plan would spread the burden among nearby residents, who would only have to deal with the crowds every four years instead of annually, and would bring the eastern inner-ring suburbs closer together as we all celebrate our nation's birthday.
