The safety and well-being of Upper West Side residents is in jeopardy with the conversion of neighborhood hotels into temporary shelters without notice to residents (The Hotel Belleclaire, The Belnord Hotel and The Lucerne). The shelter inhabitants (approx 700 in the aggregate among the 3 hotels) are not being adequately vetted before being placed in our residential community. This has resulted in 15 Level 2 and Level 3 sex offenders, some of which are violent sex offenders, being housed at the Belleclaire (14) and Belnord (1) - refer to 2nd article and check the NYS Registered Sex Offenders site. In addition, the men who have been relocated to the Lucerne are on methadone and one of the homeless residents (see article below) confirmed that many of these men are active drug users. Residents, including myself, have observed drug use in public. This situation is making life uncomfortable for residents and putting families, children and the elderly in harms way. Please sign the petition and share the link if you are in support of relocating these men to shelters or facilities where their complex mental health and addiction needs can be adequately addressed.

UPDATE: There are a total of 19 sex offenders listed on the Registry now (18 at the Belleclaire and 1 at Belnord)

There should be a broader discussion, and are deeper choice of alternative locations - such as hotels around Airports and less densely populated areas which are cheaper and less disruptive than the heart of a neighborhood which is mostly families.

1. I was taunted and chased by a homeless person stomping at me for 1/3 is the block while with my 1 year old on near 72nd Broadway 2. I have seen multiple drug deals near 77th and west end and 78th and 79th streets, the Neighborhood is changing

Placing hundreds of "recovering" drug addicts and sex offenders TOGETHER in the same hotel in an area with families with young children is not progressive. It's dangerous, naive and stupid. This is not a class or race matter. It's a practical matter.

Please let the community know what “temporary shelter” means in real time. Who is supervising groups congregating on benches on broadway median? Why aren’t the encamped homeless in the neighborhood being moved into these shelters and off the street?

I've never felt unsafe in the neighborhood or questioned going out past dark to walk my dog....until now. The lack of transparency and giving no say or notice to residents who pay taxes here and for such programs is really unacceptable and unfortunate.

I'm an elderly, disabled person who has lived on the UWS for over 30 years. I pay WAY too much money to be subjected to this. I went to Nice Matin for lunch and witnessed no fewer than 3 drug deals going on. SHAME on all of you !!!! Get rid of them !

I support you on this issue is not fair paying so much rent to live in a decent area. And have to worry about safety and we’ll being. Keep voting for these democratic politicians that they are taking this city and put it down the toilet
