We the undersigned, petition in opposition to the two shelters that were hotels, which opened with little to no notification to the community. They are directly across the street from each other and close to PS 50, since April 2020, and a prominent residential community of Queens.

We petition to DHS, HRA and the Mayor’s office to close these shelters and return them to hotels. Or make these hotels into affordable housing for seniors.

As of a 2016 report from the Mayor’s office “Turning the Tide on Homelessness in New York City”, Queens 26 shelters and 40 hotels, Community district 12 has 13 hotels, half of all the shelters in Queens. This is unacceptable.

The two new shelters are:

Men’s Shelter Comfort Inn Suites

143-18 Liberty Avenue Woman’s Shelter

Jamaica, NY 11435 144-15 Liberty Avenue

Jamaica, NY 11435

This is Unacceptable, when these people exit the shelter on mornings and and also before going in at night they are loitering in the area, smoking cussing, leaning against our vehicles having loud conversations on the phone and acting wild. Most of them are on drugs and this is very unsafe around children in the neighborhood. They also have other people showing up in cars and hanging out till all hours of the morning and sometimes even all night, smoking, litttering, defecating and urinating and around our houses. This is disgusting and unfair to the people in the neighborhood who try to keep our place clean and safe. Please do something about this, it's out of control!!!

I've had residents of these shelters enter my yard without permission and have come back from work with one resident drinking in my yard at night.

Too many shelters in QCB12. We care about the homeless, but we also care about our quality of life!

I was under the impression that the organization that put this program together had to have community input prior to opening up this estblishment.
