Concerned residents of Empire Square petition Marlin Apartments to take steps to ensure the safety of the permanent residents of Empire Square.

On the morning of the 4th of August 2019, a fight started among guests and visitors of one of Marlin Apartments' serviced flats on the 4th floor of Empire Square East. Three young men suffered stab wounds and a teenage girl was pushed from the 4th floor landing in front in the lifts, landing on the ground floor.

Further details are here: https://www.standard.co.uk/news/crime/borough-stabbing-three-men-knifed-and-woman-falls-from-height-as-fight-breaks-out-in-central-london-a4205016.html

Thankfully none of the injuries was life threatening, but the scene was chaotic and traumatic for those residents who witnessed this event and helped the injured girl. The police and emergency services responded quickly to take care of the injured, make arrests and ensure the block was safe for all the individuals and families that live here. Also, Veronica from First Port was very helpful. Nevertheless, this event should not have happened.

Marlin Apartments should have taken better precautions to screen residents and limit the number of visitors. Join your neighbours by signing this petition to demand Marlin Apartments acknowledge what happened today and take steps to prevent anything remotely similar in the future. We demand Marlin Apartments tell us, the permanent residents of Empire Square, what steps they plan to take to increase security and screening of renters.

Marlin Apartments is still hiding behind corporate silence while our neighbors recover from the violence they allowed into our building. I am tired of their negligence and will not stop pushing until they take full responsibility for the safety of everyone living at Empire Square.

The lease expressly forbids short term letting in all blocks of Empire Square for a reason. If Marlin cannot guarantee the conduct of its customers due to their lax controls then their right to lease apartments should be removed. This could so easily have led to fatalities. First Port must act before it does.

I have witnessed various things happen from the serviced apartments. I was almost injured by a large glass panel falling from one. Had cigarettes that had not been put out thrown at me. Guests throwing spaghetti down at pedestrians. CCTV cameras should be placed in and around these apartments to monitor their and others behaviour and safety.

I agree with this petition wholeheartedly. This is not the first time a party held by visitors has got out of hand. It's not the fault of the staff on the desk, who always try to do their best, it's the lack of adequate screening that's the problem. Marlin Apartments has to try harder. This is my home .

This horrific incident was wholly avoidable. Our landlord has known about problems with short lets and associated ASB on the estate for a long time and must finally act.

They could have dealt with the noise complaints more effectively in the first place. I don’t think they have got enough staff to monitor these kind of activities as almost 80% of their guests do have parties in the flats and the management is completely fine with this despite they say parties and events are not allowed.

54 East - Despite not being here on the night of the event, coming back on Sunday to this was a real shock. Me and my Partner equally share the same views that Marlin need to cover the costs to have the 4th floor cleaned, and that they massively need to change their vetting process for tenants. As permanent residents we should feel safe.

That should be -- Empire Square meeting -- in the subject line.

Quick update -- our MP, Neil Coyle, has written to some residents following the events from the 4th of August. He has written to First Port and Marlin to set up a meeting to discuss and would like to open the meeting to interested parties once a date has been set. If you would like to attend, please register your interest by emailing Mr. Coyle at [email protected] using the subject line "Empire Square meeting".
