As an alumni of Michigan Islamic Academy, I always valued my experiences and moments that made my education special in comparison to my friends that attended public schools. One of the most memorable experiences was celebrating Eid freely without worrying about exams or missing school on a vital day.
This school year(2016-17) will only include one Islamic holiday. It is imperative for Genesee Academy to value our holidays and encourage celebration and enjoyment during these blessed days. Other Islamic Schools provide their students with up to a week off and then celebrate through field trips, parties, and fun activities upon students return. One of Genesee Academy’s goals is to foster Islamic identity through their students. It is to prove to them that we value Eid over Christmas and Easter, because we live in a western society where our religion is not celebrated for its positive features.
That being said, I ask you to please give our students more than a day off of school. They should have their four days of Eid off, but I won't push for that, because I recognize that there are working parents as well. Therefore, I am asking for two days off of school. Students will subconsciously recognize that we don't care for our holidays when we give them a day off instead of more. Make students feel special for attending Genesee Academy! Help them develop a sense of loyalty to their school.

The quiet from the administration is draining but the stories you are sharing about your own children keep me going. I am continuing to reach out to the board members behind the scenes to demand they recognize the importance of these days. We are not giving up on this.

Reaching this level of momentum has been exhausting but necessary. Seeing the growing number of people who believe our students deserve this time off keeps me moving forward when the meetings feel useless.

You guys should value your religion more than other holidays. GA is a great place, but make it better in the sense where everyone is actually happy about the decisions.
As someone who is paying nearly 3000+ to keep taking holidays from school is UNACCEPTABLE. We have not even started taking days of for snow days which can add up. Our family travels a lot in the summer and I cant keep having to post pone our trips because of days off. This is a choice to be made with the parents of the community. I do not believe that we should take a day of school, but rather take a day to learn about the holiday and bond as a community, not stay home. Why not have this holiday at school where parents who work have to stay home to babysit there kids. The other solution I see is that we must shorten other breaks.
100% agree... no need of half day on Friday... eid holidays should be Monday to Wednesday. ( Monday & Tuesday MUST)
It must be a holiday at least one more day ( on Tuesday ) , we put our kids in Islamic school to feel the eniverment of islam , They had holiday in Labor Day more than Eid aladaha
It's not about having less days, it's about building a Muslim identity. Students are more excited for Christian holidays then they are Muslim Holidays
