Started by Dorp Street Sunday Market 1 year, 9 months ago
After 4 years of creating economical growth in Stellenbosch for local businesses and 80+ traders, the unique Dorp Street Sunday Market was taken away from us by the Stellenbosch Municipality on unsteady grounds with no effort to find a possible solution.

For four months our team filed all applications requested, paid numerous application fees and still got declined with no option to file an appeal. According to the Stellenbosch Land Use Application we are allowed to apply for an appeal.

The reasons for refusing the market is untrue as we covered all areas expected.
Reason 1 : The area to be utilised for market purposes is not designated for informal trading/market.

*** That is why we spent four months applying for the land use application. To receive approval for trading***

2. Areas to be utilised for such purposes must be strategically and proactively identified.
***We provided the Municipality with a detail site development plan (see on Instagram)

3. Impede pedestrian movement.
***We received an email from the Chief of Law Enforcement stating that there is more then enough space for pedestrians to move.

We urge your support by signing this petition to bring back the heart of Stellenbosch Sundays, The Dorp Street Sunday Market.

Sundays on Dorp Street was such a vibe! I stay right there! Used to my favourite day of the week just becasue the vibes DJ Paulie would bring. Lost a little of Stellies' soul when the market closed down.

Why not keep the market open WHILE searching for an alternative location?? Does the Stellenbosch municipality not understand the impact to people's livelihoods and the local economy? Also the impact to tourism, this market has become a major attraction for the town.

I cannot believe the municipality chose to do this. Dorp street is so quiet now on Sundays. Dear municipality, you made a bad decision in terms of economical growth. The market supported many entrepreneurs, the Dorp Street businesses and did so without any issues for FOUR YEARS!

When the market started I was one of the vendors. And I've met people and gotten bigger opportunities for my business to grow. And I do believe that the market is really important for small businesses to be able to grow their brand.

Dorp street market was our main source of income as a small business. It is absolutely unreasonable for the Municipality not to consider how this decision will negatively impact our livelihoods. Please reinstate this market!

The dorpstreet market is always on my to do list when visiting cape town. It encourages myself and family to spend the day in Stellenbosch. Not only visiting the market but other establishments aswell
