We have waited many years for Dublin to get a credible retail food market and we are very concerned about the private tender.
We want Dublin’s iconic Fruit and Vegetable Market to stay public and be a market for all of the people of Dublin.
I the undersigned request Dublin City Council to
- Stop the tender of the Fruit and Vegetable Market in Smithfield.
- Finance and run the market as a public municipal market.
- Conduct this process with full transparency and with a public consultation process.

I went to school at George's hill. what fantastic people working in the freezing cold winters to make a living. my grandfather worked there. It's a disgrace There ruining Dublin heritage by trying to close this market. Places like this and the stalls in Moore Street are our Dublin.
As a fourth generation market person, Yes from the market in the picture. I am asking that the word Smithfield stop been used to describe its location it is not Smithfield and also that the people from the area are not forgotten about in the process. there should be transparency and it should remain in DCC hands.
Tired of the continuing privatisation of all our assets and the erosion of any of the character and individuality in this city that signifies us as Irish and different. Keep control in the hands of the people not selling our assests to the highest bidder
I live near this market and would love to buy my food there in the future. I spent 4 years in Cork and regularly bought my groceries in the English market. Years later I still miss it. Recreate all that the English market in Cork has, but with a bigger space, also have more space for up and coming businesses.
One of my earliest memories is of helping load my grandads bike with produce for the market. The blocking of access to markets for small producers is a further erosion of the social fabric of our city.
Revive and rejuvenate this beautiful structure and let it showcase the best of this city's diverseity through our foods and cultures
An absolute shame to see this once vibrant hub of fruit and vegetable market lie idle. Every other city in Europe has an active market under roof except Dublin.

The Fruit and vegetable market should be a public amenity for the city's people, both residents and visitors. It should not fall into the hands of a private developer and end up like the Iveagh Market building has done.
