As a city who strives for continuous excellence, it's vital that the citizens of Newport have a monthly forum to discuss their concerns and ideas with the City Administration and the City Council. In addition, this forum will allow the City Council, City Manager and Department Heads to share their plans and initiatives with the public. This once a month forum will help promote transparency and improve citizen engagement with our local government. If you support the establishment of such a monthly forum, please take a moment to sign this petition in support of such a City Council resolution.

Updates

October 8, 2015

I am currently drafting a formal proposal to present to the City Council members during their next public work session. Post this link on your Facebook page today so we can show them broad support from every neighborhood. Send an email to your local representative demanding they add this forum resolution to the upcoming agenda.

October 8, 2015

The traction on this proposal proves that Newport residents are ready to sit at the table with our city officials. Call your council member today and tell them that a monthly forum is a requirement for transparency.

This idea could really catch on as an effective communication exchange. Need to find a way to make it attractive to folks to show up...not just when they have an axe to grind. It has to be worth it and work or it will just be another chance for the nay-sayers to say told you so!'

"You-Know-a-Guy" style of Newport gov't needs to be retired. World-class cities of all sizes have this level of discourse with all its stakeholders. There should be nothing to fear; let's do it.

Badly needed status updates what city hall is working on, progress report:s, strategic initiatives updates, resolutions updates, and addressing community concerns!

Great idea! The opportunity to have more transparency and partnering is welcomed! This outreach would help pull the community together and encourage more civic participation. Love the idea of regular updates in an open forum setting...scheduled for the same day/time each month. Proactive governing is always better than reactive excuses!

It certainly wouldn't hurt to try this concept. Always consider accessibility, convenient times (you don't want to rule out working folks or seniors), and "customer-friendly" format.

In addition to face to face, could technology be harnessed to increase participation (skype...video etc). But face to face is a great start

I wish senior citizens would receive a city tax reduction.
