Improve Lighting on Clemson’s CampusTarget: Improved Lighting on the Clemson University CampusSponsored By: Victoria Bethay and Rebecca CarterAs students at Clemson University it is our intention to improve lighting throughout the Clemson University campus.  It is our belief that our community will be safer with the addition of new lights in strategic areas around campus.Campus assessments have been completed through the Safety Walk that occurred in September 2011.  With this information we were able to determine that areas such as Brooks Center parking, Lee walkway and parking, around the Cooper Library bridge, Nu Street (parking above C1), and CAT bus stops as opportunities for lighting improvement.  We hope to address lighting installation and maintenance checks in each of these specified areas.  According to Sergeant Karl Kaylor of the Clemson University Police Department, during the 2011-2012 academic year there have been numerous vehicular break-ins in commuter parking lots.  In 2010 there were several burglaries, vehicular thefts, two forcible sexual offenses, as well as 3 instances of aggravated assault. Within the past few weeks there has been an incident of aggravated assault and students were advised to stay in “well-lit areas” of campus.Improving lighting on campus may help to eliminate crimes on campus and make this institution a safer and more inviting place to learn.  It is our duty as members of the Clemson community to create a safe and non-threatening environment for our fellow students, employees, and residents. For more information please visit www.clemson.edu

I am truly overwhelmed by the momentum this is gaining and I never thought so many people would join me in this effort. This is entirely due to your willingness to speak up for our shared safety. Seeing this kind of response is a reminder that we really can move the needle when we pull together.

About time someone did something about this. The stretch near the Brooks Center is pitch black after 8pm. Safety should be the priority.

The walk from the library to my car is terrifying at night. I always keep my keys in my hand and run the whole way. We seriously need some lights back there.

Fix the lighting. It is ridiculous that we pay this much in tuition and still have to worry about getting jumped in the parking lots at night.
