This petition is to strictly amend the Kenai Peninsula Borough School District Health Services policy for head lice procedures with students and staff (Pediculosis Examination and Evaluation).
Currently, the policy does not permit school faculty to send a courtesy note to notify parents of live lice exposure in their child’s class unless there is proof of multiple children infested.
School district health services representatives have stated that they do not want notes sent to parents due to HIPAA patient confidentiality. They have also stated that an anonymous note sent to the parents of the students in the classroom could lead to bullying of any child suspected of having lice. Head lice is a public health concern, not a behavioral concern, and a courtesy note to parents is not in violation of any HIPAA policies.
Our goal with this petition is to require an anonymous courtesy note to parents when ANY child or staff in the same classroom has had live lice.
This petition will decrease the likelihood of student’s having and sharing live lice in the classroom by encouraging parents to be proactive in checking their children at home when lice is found. The results of this petition will be a safer learning environment for students and increased school attendance.
In order to show the school district the cumulative concern in this matter, we are trying to get at as many signatures as possible in support.

My two daughters have gotten head lice every year since being enrolled at ksas. I am always on the look out for lice in my children and take the necessary precautions. Unfortunately, the school no longer informs us of lice cases. Parents need to be informed about active cases. Most don't know to look if they have never experienced it, and wouldn't know to look without being informed.
Lice run rampant throughout our schools. Last year it was common practice for the Redoubt Elementary school nurse to perform monthly lice checks. This school year that has gone away. Unacceptable!
I can see the current policy increasing the rate of lice incidents, resulting in higher absences and lost parent wages, as they have to take leave from work, as well.
Please send out notification of lice. I check my daughter regularly as it is but others do not. I letter being sent home is a great reminder and prevention tool. If found it can be taken care of immediately instead of being spread around.
Parents should absolutely be notified when children are exposed to lice! The notification does not have to say and should not say who exposed them, that doesn't really matter anyway, just that they were exposed. It also should not be limited to just 1 class but the entire student body as kids are also around each other elsewhere in the school. This would also further protect the identity of the source.

It is becoming out of hand that an individuals feelings are being placed above the collective health and wellbeing of everyone at school. A public health risk is not something that should be hidden from other students or their parents.
