First it was 10...then 8...and now possibly 5 nurses to serve close to 5,000 students! JSD Nurses need YOUR support! If you support the health, safety and education of Juneau's young people, please add your signature to this petition and pass it on! The current proposal is to cut the nurses down to 5 and hire 5 "health assistants" to fill in for the nurses who were cut. In some states this may work, but Alaska and particularly Juneau, is unique in that it has limited healthcare services & many times patients must be medivacked to Seattle or Anchorage. School nurses typically practice independently and are called upon to assess student health, develop and execute plans for care management, act as first responders, and engage in public health functions such as disease surveillance, immunization compliance, and health promotion. The school nurse is a vital member of the school team that leads change to advance health and collaborates with school staff members, parents and community members to keep students safe at school and healthy to learn.
