My two daughters have gotten head lice every year since being enrolled at ksas. I am always on the look out for lice in my children and take the necessary precautions. Unfortunately, the school no longer informs us of lice cases. Parents need to be informed about active cases. Most don't know to look if they have never experienced it, and wouldn't know to look without being informed.

Lice run rampant throughout our schools. Last year it was common practice for the Redoubt Elementary school nurse to perform monthly lice checks. This school year that has gone away. Unacceptable!

An anonymous note should be sent to parents. Crazy to think of the possibilities and outbreak with out some communication.

An anonymous note sent home to not only the classroom that the lice was found in but the whole school, would help prevent the spread of lice. Having a child whose had lice a few times now, in different grade levels, I know first hand how frustrating, expensive, and taxing on a family lice can be (there was one time my child had it, i got rid of it and she turned around and got it again because parents were not informed to check their children, so she was re-infested with it!) I had no problem wanting to inform others when my child had lice but the schools didn't want me too and that was very frustrating. Between social media and just word-of-mouth, parents will eventually learn about any lice outbreak that is occurring. So, there should be no harm with sending an anonymous note home. Also, maybe school nurses can have a talk with classrooms about lice and educating children on how lice is actually attracted to clean hair and the (lack of) cleanliness of a child has nothing to do with getting lice. Tell kids that anyone can get lice. Maybe if schools are worried about the stigma attatched to lice and bullying followed by it, can be lessened with education of it.

I can see the current policy increasing the rate of lice incidents, resulting in higher absences and lost parent wages, as they have to take leave from work, as well.

Please send out notification of lice.
I check my daughter regularly as it is but others do not. I letter being sent home is a great reminder and prevention tool. If found it can be taken care of immediately instead of being spread around.

Parents need to be informed, if their kid is exposed to lice. Contrary is unacceptable.

Parents should absolutely be notified when children are exposed to lice! The notification does not have to say and should not say who exposed them, that doesn't really matter anyway, just that they were exposed.
It also should not be limited to just 1 class but the entire student body as kids are also around each other elsewhere in the school. This would also further protect the identity of the source.

This policy further isolates children with lice, allows them to go untreated and for the spread of lice between students. The only winners in this scenario are the makers of lice treatments!

The current policy is a joke. Please rewrite the policy.
When your child gets lice it is expensive and extremely time consuming. Children should not be allowed at school with lice or nits, and children should be checked before returning to school.

Please send a courtesy note, I highly doubt anybody's feelings would be hurt especially if a teacher or nurse didn't make a big scene about it, just like if a student wet there pants or something. But having lice is a big deal especially for families with multiple children, everyone knows once one gets it so will the others!

The logic behind this is so parents can be proactive in checking and catching early, before the whole family is infected, and to catch before sending infected child to school where then others become infected. Lice spread so fast ! Let's all work together to create a safer and less stressful time for families.
