The board reversed their decision and granted the exemption so we are officially moving forward at the old firehouse. I am completely overwhelmed by this result and I know it only happened because you showed up for this idea. Thank you for believing in this project when it looked like …

UPDATE 1.19.22 - Unfortunately the BZA denied the request on 1/18 for a special exemption for a taproom. The general consensus was they didn't find the use compatible with the surrounding commercial properties and with the residential neighboring lots.

We appreciate your support in this venture. We truly want to be a part of the James Island community. We will keep you in the know with our progress on finding a new location.

------------------------------

UPDATE 1.16.22 - The property was successfully voted on to change zoning to CC - Community Commercial. We cannot have a taproom / sell product on site unless we get an exemption from the BZA (Board of Zoning Appeals). The meeting with the BZA is THIS TUESDAY JANUARY 18 AT 7:00PM via Zoom. If we do not get approval then we would have to wait a year to be heard again by the BZA, meaning we would not do business there and it would be rented to someone else that fits CC criteria.

Information on the meeting and how to attend on Zoom: https://www.jamesislandsc.us/notice-of-bza-public-hearing-1

If you live close-by and are interested in speaking in support during public comment please register by 12PM Tuesday 1/18 by emailing [email protected] or send an email with your comments if you are unable to attend.

UPDATE 10.18.21 - The Zoning meeting with the Town of James Island went really well on Thursday 10.14. We had unanimous approval from the board to rezone the old firehouse property to Commercial in order to use the space as a production brewery, taproom, and restaurant.

HOWEVER - It will not be rezoned until the Town Council votes on it. The next meeting with the Town Council is Thursday November 18th. The process does not stop there; assuming the property gets rezoned then we will have to negotiate our lease agreement. We are making great forward progress.

I will keep you posted on any developments. We would also love support at the November 18th meeting.

About

Beer Engineer Supply (BES) is expanding its homebrew supply store operations in North Charleston to bring a production brewery, taproom, and restaurant to James Island. Our supply store will also be located in our new location for the Charleston area beer and wine making hobbyists. (ACTUAL BREWERY NAME is TBD; we're in the process of trademarking.)

BES will provide an inviting atmosphere for family, friends, and community to gather and share experiences over a few pints and great food. With our extensive knowledge in the beverage industry we promise to provide drinks to satisfy everyone's different pallets. BES is passionate about education for our homebrewers and our expanded location on James Island will allow us to provide classes, competitions, and other outreach programs for the local Charleston community.

Most importantly, BES at the Camp Road firehouse location will bring a much-desired environment to the James Island community. We are a family friendly operation that will have ample parking, sidewalks for our neighbors nearby, and live music. It will be a place to safely unwind and celebrate a productive day, or a lazy day with your loved ones and new friends you will meet here.

What Signing This Petition Means

As locals to James Island and a family who resides in Rivers Point Plantation, we are asking for neighborhood and community support. By signing this petition, you are letting the Town of James Island know that you support a local brewery on Camp Road at the old firehouse building. You understand that this will provide a place to safely walk with family and friends and get to know your fellow neighbors as well as friends and family near and far.

PLEASE SIGN BY TUESDAY October 12, 2021. Our hearing is October 14th.

Updates

October 12, 2021

I am truly humbled by the messages you have sent me about what a neighborhood spot could mean for our area. While the recent board decision was not what we hoped for, your passion has confirmed that this is a vision worth pursuing elsewhere. Please stay tuned as I look for a new space to bring this dream to life.

A brewery was the first thing that came to mind when the property next door went up for sale. A restaurant to boot makes it even BETTER !

Strongly support this as this area of James island desperately needs an area where the community can gather and socialize. We don’t need banks or car washes or gas stations. We need something that improves quality of life and this would be a great start.

As a professional brewer that came from a homebrewing background I fully support this effort and know first hand the economic and social impact a brewery can have.

We live directly behind this building and would love a gate installed so we can easily walk through.

Skupporting local, but, also need to keep neighbors safe and respect their peace a quiet, that backs up to a condo complex which could intrude on their privacy and peace
