More than 160 people turned up to a public meeting in Western Leisure Centre, Caerau on Tuesday night calling for the No12 Cardiff Bus service to be reinstated.

In April, the company announced it was axing the route following funding cuts by the Welsh Government.

Route 12 operated from the Drope to Cardiff Central Station via Llanover Road, Cowbridge Road West, Broad Street and Ninian Park Road.

Now disgruntled residents are campaigning for the route to be restored.

Ken Long, 80, from Cyntwell Crescent, said the absence of the No 12 has left many elderly people struggling to get around.

He said: “Some people in their 70s and 80s have to walk half a mile, maybe more, to get a bus into town. We want the service back because a lot of people are distressed that they can’t get around.

“The meeting was very well turned out and shows that people want the service reinstated.

“Everyone there relied on that bus. Older people can’t get out now. It’s too far for them to walk.”

Peter Heath, operations and commercial director at Cardiff Bus, said: “The No 12 is one of a handful of routes that no longer covers the cost of operating it. To the west of Cardiff, the Drope still has service 13, Cowbridge Road still has service 96/96A and Ninian Park Road 95/95A.

“What has been lost is a service on Llanover Road and Broad Street and from the Drope to Cowbridge Road, but the level of use from these areas would not have covered the cost of continuing service 12.

“Consequently, we have no plans to reinstate the service. We appreciate the inconvenience that this will cause some of customers, but we are only doing this because we don’t have a choice.

“These are unfortunate, but necessary, measures to safeguard the long-term viability of the company and the comprehensive network of services we offer,” he said.

This explanation was totally unsatisfactory and if you agree then please sign this petition to reinstate the NUMBER 12!

Cardiff Bus did not think this through it was just a political knee jerk reaction, it has rendered my parents - both in their 80s housebound unless the family can take them out, what little independence they had has gone - shame on you Cardiff Bus

My uncle is 82 years old and now has to catch 4 bus's if he needs to see his GP and of late he is unwell and this is causing great concern for me as a family member as we are all stressed out about it.

13 and 12 every hour on their previous routes leaving the station half hour apart would have benn better than cutting the 12 entirely. It isn't rocket science to work out that doing this was going to leave some of the most vulnerable people with no access at all to a bus service.

People need to get to work so they can support their families. Elderly people also need pullic transportation. If you need to take money from some place, take it from the public servents that in retirement make over $100,000 a year.

Disgusting that the service was axed before taking into consideration the views and needs of the public, especially the needs of the elderly and infirm.
