PETITION TO SAVE THE CHALK END BUS SERVICE (ROUTE 59)

To: Arriva UK Bus, Essex County Council Transport Department and Chelmsford City Council

We, the undersigned, strongly oppose the removal of the 59 bus service at Chalk End (Farmbridge End Road). This decision will isolate residents, harm vulnerable groups and contradicts Essex County Council’s commitment to rural transport access. Arriva are stopping the service from 1 June 2025.

Why This Matters:

  • All residents without access to cars will be isolated.
  • The bus stop is vital for the elderly, disabled and visitors to the area.
  • Removing the service will significantly increase unnecessary car and taxi journeys.
  • No alternative transport exists.
  • The next nearest bus stops are nearly half a mile away along the A1060 which has no footpath or lighting and is a dangerous road to walk.
  • Many bus stops on the A1060 have fewer passengers.
  • No consultation was held and no notice has been given.
  • The short detour to the Chalk End bus stops adds no extra time or distance (563 yards = A1060 route length).

We Demand:

  • Immediate reversal of the decision to cut the Chalk End 59 bus stops.
  • Public consultation with affected residents.
  • Transparency about the data used to justify this change.

The Chalk End stop is well used, especially by students travelling to college, young people without their own transport and the elderly. The bus stop is safe and away from the fast, busy and unlit 1060. It is such a minor detour surely the bus saves very little time.

Rural areas depend on these infrequent buses and the elderly and parents with pushchairs cannot be expected to walk over a mile on a pavement less fast road. Do not get rid of this bus route.

How are people expected to walk 1/2 mile along a busy a road with no pavement to reach the nearest bus stop? Bad decision made after no consultation or notice.

The Chalk End bus stops also serve the residents of Good Easter and surrounding areas. Some residents have seen 59 buses ignoring the Chalk End stops and continuing along the A1060 instead, this would put into question the figures relating to passenger numbers.

There is no sensible justification to cancel this. It adds barely 30 seconds to the journey. Don’t isolate people just to save a tiny amount of bus journey time.

I have 2 teenage daughters that use this bus. On more then 4 occasions the drivers have passed my daughters without collecting them.

Many younger folk don't have cars and the bus is the safe, affordable and reliable travel giving access to their community, learning, friends and family and with an existing bus stop it shouldn't be lost. its a nonsense to remove it as it would pass by yards away, but the loss of stop unfair? I recently heard of a rural planning permission request could fail because it didn't have a bus stop? Don't loss an existing stop please!.
