On the 14th January 2021, the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Thyateira announced the election of His Grace Bishop Athanasios of Tropaeou as the Metropolitan of Colognia - an Ecclesiastical Province in Asia Minor. The honour, though actioned by the Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, was suggested and requested by Archbishop Nikitas.

This "promotion" was not requested by the Bishop nor was it discussed with him beforehand. The implications of this "paper" title, that has no real responsibility and is of no congregational relevance, are that Bishop Athanasios is stripped of his duties as Community Leader of the Greek Orthodox Communities - encompassing the Cathedral of St Mary, the Church of St. Barnabas, the Sunday Schools and Greek School of St. Barnabas. He will be stripped of all of his leadership tasks and authorities. He will not be allowed to participate in Church Services and Liturgies without express permission from Archbishop Nikitas. Furthermore, he will be required to leave his home of almost quarter of a century and the offices from where he has served and supported the local community and represented the Archdiocese for over thirty years.

The Bishop is still of sound health and mind, and has served the community faultlessly and without incident for over three decades. Together with his uncle, the much loved and respected late Archbishop Gregorios, they created and established the Greek Orthodox Community in North London - the largest in the UK.

Though the Bishop is not resistant to change and new blood in our community, we must respect and safeguard the legacy both Clerics have left behind.

Bishop Athanasios should be allowed to REMAIN as Community Leader. He should be allowed to lead and participate in services and liturgies WITHOUT requiring permission. He should be allowed to REMAIN in his residence and in his offices for as long as he should so choose. We must acknowledge what this man has done and the community and show him the most amount of RESPECT.

It appears that the actions of the Archdiocese have not displayed such respect. We as a community must insist and demand in the best interests of our community that Bishop Athanasios REMAINS active and in charge for as long as he should wish and is able to carry out his duties.

We demand upon the Archdiocese to make these assurances in public to the community that has supported the Church, the Archdiocese and the Patriarchate since its inception.

PLEASE SIGN THIS PETITION IN AGREEMENT WITH THESE DEMANDS.

PLEASE ALSO DISTRIBUTE TO FRIENDS & FAMILY & ALL OTHER COMMUNITY MEMBERS & BEYOND.

The scale of this response is overwhelming and honestly it has been a long road to get here. Seeing so many people recognize what Bishop Athanasios means to our community confirms that the fight to keep him home is necessary. We are exhausted but we are not stepping back.

His eminence Athanasius has always been a key figure in our Community and far beyond. He has been without doubt someone to support and help people when in difficult times there was no one to speak too. It would be a great loss for him to be sent else where and hope this action is not take.

Bishop Athanasios is the heart and soul of the community for so many years! Both adults and children love and respect him. His wise words enlighten children of all ages as well as adults! He must be allowed to continue here with us all! There is no need to move him....

Bishop Athanasios has dedicated decades of his life building the Greek and Greek Cypriot community through the church and school. Pushing him to one side like this is outrageously disrespectful.

He should be given the respect he deserves to decide on these matters not be given orders from above and not even be consulted about them. He must stay as long as he likes and reside at his premises and offices as long as he likes.

Bishop Athanasios is the heart of the Greek Cypriot community. Taking the heart the body is bleating. I wish that this great mistake will stop. He should remain in Woodgreen until the end of his life. He has still much to offer

Since Archbishop Nikitas came to our Archdiocese, he has caused many many problems that others fail to see. One prime example is the persecution of the clergy and transferring priests to other parts of the UK leaving a community without a priest. I wonder if this yank is depriving our churches of money because he needs a lot to spend on his lavish lifestyle.

I have known the bishop Athanasi for 42 years and he has helped so many people in so many different ways. He is one kind and considerable man that god has ever created in the world. Who gives Nikita the right to remove the Bishop from our church, who does he think he is God? The public loves and respects our Bishop so leave him alone, why doesn’t Nikita go back to where he came from, he has caused too many problems. May god forgive him for the pain he has caused to all of us including the Bishop
