On September 14, 2014, our beloved Padre Carmelo conducted his last mass at St Peters (Italian) Church, London.

This petition is to

* to provide our parishioners with a vehicle to show their disappointment, hurt and feelings of being let down by the Church (we were kept in the dark of the Church’s decision to return Padre Carmelo to Roma until 2 weeks before conducting his final mass), and

* highlight our love and support of Padre Carmelo.

Padre Carmelo has been the heart of the Italian community in Londra for 43 years, where he not only served the Church but tirelessly supported those who society would otherwise turn away from, such as prisoners, drug addicts and alcoholics.

We feel a great sense of injustice in the way Padre Carmelo (and the community) has been treated. Padre Carmelo should have been given the option, now he is past “retirement age”, to retire here in his ‘home’ and act as a mentor to support Padre Andrea in his new role as the lead Italian Padre in St Peters, Londra. Padre Andrea is a worthy successor and we are sure he too feels the loss of Padre Carmelo’s experience and wisdom keenly. As will the Church and the Italian community which we, ourselves, are part of.

Our aim is to highlight the injustice of Padre Carmelo’s move back to Roma after so many has caused throughout the Italian community in Londra, and show our support to Padre Carmelo as he readjusts to a life back in Italy, with a new congregation.

We are a voice for the Italian Community who wish for Padre Carmelo to be offered the option to return back to St Peter’s Church, to semi-retire and continue his work as a man of God, where he is loved and cherished.

Please also join us on our Facebook page where we share wonderful, heartwarming stories + memories, plus our favourite photographs of Padre Carmelo!

I am truly overwhelmed by the steady stream of people speaking up for Padre Carmelo. This momentum belongs entirely to the community that has loved him for so long and I am just humbled to witness it.

Padre Carmelo's departure is indeed a loss to our community, however by the same token a new community will be inspired by his continued hard work. We should all feel priviledged that

Father Carmelo married my husband and I and also baptised our eldest child. He was truly on the the kindest, funniest and most sincere people I have met. He was also a true priest in the sense that he worked with the most marginalised in society.
