Batalá Durham has been rehearsing in Durham Central Park for the past 2 summers and only recently run into issues with a few neighbors in the new developments across the street. We have been working with Durham Central Park Inc (who manages the park and it's activities), the police, and talking to the media to inform the public of the issues that we have been having. While we believe we are using the park legally and in compliance with the noise ordinances in Durham, the police have stopped our rehearsals when a neighbor has complained. We are trying to gather signatures from the community who are interested in supporting our cause and believe that we should have the right to continue using the park to practice our music. We'd like to hear from people who want to keep Durham a vibrant community that embraces the arts and music so we can demonstrate that a small minority of new residents in the community shouldn't be the only people dictating what activities should be allowed in the public spaces. We'd like to keep Durham interesting, exciting, diverse, and culturally rich. Please add your name if you support us and our ongoing struggle with this issue.

The feedback confirms this matters to the community far beyond the park. We are still talking with park management about finding a permanent solution.

I strongly support Batala as an organization that exposes Durham residents to historic Brazilian culture; and percussion deeply rooted in West Africa. Practices that are accessible to the larger community are a blessing to Durham residents,

I live close to Duke and often, when they have events, they play music late into the night. They stop on time so I have never complained. It's annoying so shall I complain? Will the police cite Duke if I do? How about the fact that the fireworks annoy me from the Bulls stadium?

I am a Liberty Warehouse resident and I support Batala Durham. I find it disheartening that complaints from our neighbor are harassing this group. We CHOSE to live here and we should want to be a part of the downtown Durham community, not try to change the things that make it wonderful.

We heard these guys last week as we were passing by. They give Durham its diverse, delicious flavor. The sound was at a reasonable level and they stopped playing at a reasonable time. Leave them alone and let them play.

I am a Liberty Warehouse resident and stand with the many members of the Liberty Warehouse community who support Batala Durham's right to practice. I object to this aggressive attempt to shut down the drumming in favor of a single individual's needs.

My family have been in Durham since the mid-1800's and I have lived near downtown my entire life. Whilst development and change are necessary to keep any community thriving, it does seem that new arrivals come to Durham don't fully embrace what makes our home unique.

It is groups like Batalá Durham that make me return to Durham over and over again, because I can't resist the city's vibrant and diverse art scene. People in the new developments had to have been aware that they were living in an urban environment where there are performances and excitement in outdoor spaces. The expectations of the few people complaining are simply out of alignment with the community where they now live. Please keep Durham real. I want to keep visiting.
