Preserve Live Music and Dance at Lake Merritt Dance in Oakland at Veterans Building!
We are asking City Council to write a resolution that shows these programs are important to Oakland and to those who love our music and dance heritages. Please sign this petition and share with your friends if you think the City Council and Mayor should preserve these existing programs long term as a gem of Oakland. This petition will go to City Council and Mayor to show there is community support.
We are already in the process of negotiating with the City Administration, but existing resolutions don’t cover this circumstance at this building, so the programs are always vulnerable to being cancelled with 90 days notice. We want to change this so we can do long term planning.

The volume of support has secured us a formal meeting with representatives from the City Administration. We are now preparing a draft resolution to ensure these programs gain long-term stability and protection from abrupt cancellation.

The Veteran's Building spacious room, the stage, and the wooden floor is just such a gem for dancing! Why take it away? This is a healthful, non-alcoholic, peaceful activity enjoyed by hundreds of dancers, many of them seniors.. dancing at the Veteran's Building would seem to be just the type of activity a city would promote!
I drive from Petaluma to Oakland several times a month to dance West Coast Swing on these beautiful floors. They were meant for dancing. Please keep the Veteran's Building as a center for dance! We also support your local businesses when we go out to eat beforehand.
I have been involved with dance events at the Veterans Building for many years. I'd estimate 50% of our diverse crowd are seniors, which I believe serves the interest of the senior programs as well as the that of the dance community.
Please try to keep live music and dancing available at the Lake Merritt dance center. It is an integral part of the community for so many people from different dance traditions. I recommend Argentine tango dancing to my patients all the time. It’s well-documented in research to help dementia, Parkinson’s, and other health conditions.
Oakland is live music and cultural dance. As an Oakland native, I am currently witnessing the many changes of my city and not in a good way. Homelessness has increased, gentrification and the cost of living is devastating, etc... We need to keep our rich culture in tact and the "arts" plays a huge part.
I have taken so many classes and had (and will be having ) an upcoming performance in this wonderful, historic venue. Please keep this viable institution open to the dance and other arts.

My fellow dancers have made the best arguments for keeping dances at 200 Grand. What will be the economic repercussions to the merchants selling food in the area, and to the citizens of Oakland losing all of the dance revenue for maintaining the building?
