Middle school students at Union Middle School and all across Canyons School district were faced with a new policy starting in the 2016-17 school year. A plan was made which prohibited backpacks in core classes. Students must now run all of the way to their lockers, gather all of their supplies, and get back to class in the four minute time span between classes. This procedure can cause tardies and other unwanted backlash. If this act is accepted, other safety precautions can be made to ensure teachers and students' safety. Backpacks can all be stored in a designated spot, while requests to use the backpacks can be supervised and kept under control. We believe that this act will improve students' well-being, while also preventing food or other prohibited items being used in class. Our goal is to allow all students across Canyons School District to be able to have backpacks in class! Even if they do right now, they should keep that right!

The feedback regarding the current locker policy has been substantial and informative. I am currently compiling these experiences to present a clear case for the administrative review process.

The response to this petition has been truly significant and reinforces the necessity of our objective. This momentum confirms that families throughout the district prioritize student efficiency and well-being over current logistical restrictions.

I was a student at Union middle and I NEEDED my backpack in classes! My locker was in a completely different hall opposite from my classes which was hard with time between classes and making it on time.

This no backpacks rule is stupid and is making me tardy. I for one take ceramics and this rule forces me to juggle all my stuff and I accidentally dropped my ceramics project because of this rule, if I had my back pack I could hold everything and keep my project safe but I can't or else I go to detention. How stupid is that! The rest of school gets to use theirs, so why can't I use mine?

If they are going to make us leave our backpacks in lockers they need to either be more lenient on tardys or give us more time between classes they also should have told us about this rule before school started so we could have not bought expensive backpacks

This is a ridiculous rule growing up I've always had my backpack with me and all of my classes and it has help me be prepared for the class and ready to learn. Backpacks should be allowed it's unquestionable.

Backpacks were never an issue when I went to union. Why would you take those away knowing that students already come tardy for class. You're just asking for more!
