Middle school students at Union Middle School
and all across Canyons School district were faced with a new policy starting in
the 2016-17 school year. A plan was made which prohibited backpacks in core
classes. Students must now run all of the way to their lockers, gather all of
their supplies, and get back to class in the four minute time span between
classes. This procedure can cause tardies and other unwanted backlash. If this
act is accepted, other safety precautions can be made to ensure teachers and students'
safety. Backpacks can all be stored in a designated spot, while requests to use
the backpacks can be supervised and kept under control. We believe
that this act will improve students' well-being, while also preventing food or
other prohibited items being used in class. Our goal is to allow all students across Canyons School District to be able to have backpacks in class! Even if they do right now, they should keep that right!
I was a student at Union middle and I NEEDED my backpack in classes! My locker was in a completely different hall opposite from my classes which was hard with time between classes and making it on time.
