Petition to Allow Students to Bring their Backpacks to their Last Class of the Day

Overview

Whereas students coming from the Mod, the Quad, and the Music Hallway run the risk of missing the bus if they have to stop at their locker at the end of the day.

The people of Cooper Middle School believe that if a student's last class of the day is in the Mod, the Quad, or the Music Hallway, they should have the option to bring their backpack to class. The privilege is only provided at the discretion of the individual teacher whose classroom was mentioned.

Terms and Conditions

1) If the specified teacher grants this privilege, students must follow their instructions in regards to the usage and placement of backpacks during class.

2) Students will still be held responsible for being to class on time. If a student is late, they will receive an unexcused tardy and possible loss of backpack privileges in the case of repeated offenses.

3) All rules stated in the Fairfax County Student Rights and Responsibilities still apply. No drugs, weapons, alcohol, tobacco, stolen items, or similar articles may be stored in backpacks. School officials may search a student's backpack if they have reasonable evidence. Illegal items under the SR&R will be confiscated and the student will face consequences based upon the SR&R's Levels of Intervention and/or legal consequences.

If a student misuses or abuses this privilege in any way, it will result in disciplinary actions and/or loss of the privilege.

The feedback from students across these different wings highlights how much time is currently lost during the final transit of the day. A few teachers have begun discussing how we might implement these guidelines safely within their specific classrooms. I appreciate the thoughtful approach that many of you are taking to ensure this transition remains orderly and respectful of school policies.

Seeing the momentum behind this request suggests that the daily scramble for the bus is a challenge many of us share. It is heartening to realize that so many students recognize the need for a practical solution to our end of day routine.

THIS RULE IS SO ANNOYING. I have 2 minutes to get to the buses and my locker is on the other side of the building. just let us carry our stuff!!1!

It makes no sense. We have heavy books and not enough time to get everything done. Please fix this.

my locker at the quad is way to far away. walking back and forth just to drop off a bag is a total waste of time when the bus is already waiting.

Locker time is basically nonexistent. Trying to shove books in and get to the door before the driver leaves is impossible.

I have signed this petition, but I frankly don't see the reason for the causing of issues affiliated with the backpack. People should be more observant, learn to move faster, and be more street smart, thereby avoiding accidents. For those who don't know what efficient travel in the hallways is (e.g. sprinting and crashing), ignore them. Cheers

Middle school is supposed to prepare us for high school, and a major change is the use of backpacks in class.
