In response to the rapid expansion and developments in and around Articial Intelligence these past few months, we artists have no choice but to take a stand against the use of AI in the Belgian animation industry.

Following an inquiry from the VAF (Vlaams Audiovisueel Filmfonds) a handful of Belgian artists have worked together to collate concerns, requests and questions into a single document. This document forms a first solid base to demand protection for our Belgian animation industry by supporting the human creatives instead of Generative AI.

This so called faster and cheaper way of creating 'art' violates not only our copyright, but also our author's rights which directly harms the fundament on which our industry is built; an industry created through and by the creative and skilled labor of an entire group of people. People whose work is now stolen to power the generative AI technology that is poised to replace them.

We would ask you to please read the included document, and to sign this petition;

If applicable, please add the position you have in the creative sector to the 'comments' field (junior designer, senior animator, compositor, student, etc.)

Visdev and background artist in animation film with a dream to work in book cover illustrations. This dream may become obsolete if AI is allowed to dominate our creative industry, if the general public and leadership chooses the value of money over the value of art made by human hands.

As an artist, I reject the idea that my labor and ideas should be devoured and regurgitated endlessly by AI algorithms without proper compensation or credit. Therefore I stand with the artists who have been affected by this already. No more unethical AI exploitation of human artists.

I'm about to graduate in a field that was already very competitive and difficult to get into, and I fear that the upcoming (unregulated) AI will completely suffocate it, as well as many creative fields completely.

I think everything has already been said, but as a belgian artist, I feel threatened by those unlimited AI. Time to add some rules and protect the human beings behind the creations we can see everywhere

Illustrator. Until AI is trained ethically with permission and fair compensation to every single person whose arts and works have been stolen, there is 0 negotiation in its use in any commercial space.

As an artist who has worked for 30 years on my paintings, I am disgusted that companies are able to scrape my work and that of millions of others from the internet and vomit out images. Artistic expression is 40,000 years old. Don't let greedy corporations steal what they did not and could not create.

As an architect with formal training in arts I too agree that big tech has no right to claim the works of millions of artists as fair use to power their generative AIs for their own profit. This is a blatant violation of the three steps outlined in the Berne treaty, one signatory countries are bound to follow.
