The city manager agreed to install the new street lights starting next month. We pushed until they finally acted so keep your eyes open to ensure the crews finish the job properly.

Neighbors,

Last year I wrote to Miami Shores City Manager, Tom Benton, about the darkness in our city after sunset. Although he did respond and ask that trees around the lights be cut, nothing was every done and no additional street lights were installed.

Please sign this petition to increase the street lights in our great City so that we may have lights to walk with our kids and dogs after work hours safely. There has been a substantial increase in burglaries and robberies as of late and I'm sure more lights will deter such activity.

Thank you,

Alina Nunez

Updates

December 1, 2016

I met with the city manager this week to demand a plan for better lighting coverage across our neighborhoods. Contact your local council member today to pressure them to prioritize this safety project on the next agenda.

December 1, 2016

The momentum we have built makes it clear that safety concerns in our neighborhood are reaching a breaking point. Post this link on your Facebook page today and email your local council member to demand they finally address our street light request.

The 200 block of NW 91st has NO street lights on the Miami Shores side....and one on the El Portal side.

The darkness on many streets invites the criminal element and puts walkers, runners, and cyclists at risk. We need better lighting.

Too many of our streets are nearly black at night, providing too many hiding spaces for prowlers. High intensity crime lights are ugly and unnecessary. There are plenty of attractive lighting options available.

One additional light per block would do wonders. A thorough night time assessment of trees that block streetlight coverage by public works could also identify trees needing trimming and eliminate the need for some adding lights.

Thank you for creating this petition. Certainly I get very scared to arrive home at night with my kids and come out of the car at my drive way. The streets are so dark! I don't feel safe. Thanks again.
