We are calling on ESUMS in West Haven to end hijab color restrictions and allow students to wear hijabs that reflect their identity, faith, and dignity. A hijab is not just an accessory. For many students, it is part of who we are, a form of self-expression, and a daily expression of faith. When students are told they can only wear certain colors, it can feel restrictive and deeply disrespectful. When wearing colorful tights is permitted, but different hijab colors are forbidden, it feels more as if it's disrespect towards the religion itself rather than preventing a “distraction”. Students who wear colorful hijabs and STILL follow the dress code are no different than other kids who have the right to style their hair, dye their hair bright and fun colors and wear colorful tights. It doesn't matter if one is hair and the other is considered “a piece of fabric”. It matters that this is oppression. For example, if one were to ban braids and only allow them without extensions or for the braids to be the same color of their natural hair. It’s oppressive against girls' rights to express themselves through their style since there is a dress code forbidding them from expressing themselves through clothes. School should be a place where hijabi students feel comfortable, included, and able to show up as themselves. Just as people choose different hairstyles, clothes, and colors to reflect their personal style, hijabi students should be able to choose hijab colors that fit their own identity, sense of dignity and boost their confidence rather than plummet it. Assigned colors can send the wrong message and make students feel singled out instead of respected. Having every hijabi look the same takes away the diversity of each student having their own uniqueness. For students already navigating the challenges of wearing hijab in America, extra restrictions can make school feel less welcoming and can affect confidence and comfort in daily life.

A hijab is not an accessory, it’s a very important part of their religion and culture. If other people can dye their hair whatever color they please, then muslim girls should be able to do the same with their hijab. It’s a way of self expression, not a distraction.
Allowing any color will show true inclusion for hjabis because it lets them express themseleves through their hijab.
I think following the dress code should be enough. Hijab colors clearly aren’t a distraction towards anyone, and it seems incredibly disrespectful towards Muslims by restricting them from expressing their religion in a way that isn’t affecting anyone.
I feel as though all muslim students should have the right to be able to wear whatever color hijab they want, especially if they are still following the dress code. Just as others can use their hair to express themselves, we use our hijabs to express ourselves.
